MID-COLUMBIA ATH
LETIC MEET SATURDAY
The annual mid-Columbia interschol
astic track meet will be held at Gib
eon field, the Hood River high school
athletic Grounds, on next Saturday,
Teams from Stevenson, Goldendale
and White Salmon. Wash., and The
Dalles and Hood River high schools
will compete. Athletes of the diff
erent schools, it is said, will be accoro
panied by large delegations of rooters,
and the total crowd is expected to
reach several hundred.
The mid-Loinmbia schools have sac
rificed their baseball schedules this
season, in order to devote their time
exclusively to track work. Reports
from all schools are to the effect that
some remarkable talent has been de
veloped. The results of the meet, it is
said, will be watched with keen inter
est by northwestern institutions of
higher education, as a majority of the
athletes are members of the year s
graduating classes and will enter col
lege next tail.
DUCKWALL MAKES
ROUTE SUGGESTION
W. S. Duckwall. of Indianapolis,
salesmanager of Duckwall tiros.,
writes that the attendance at the an
nual convention of the International
Apple Shippers Association at Seattle
in July will run wen over l.zuu.
"From talks 1 have bad with the
commission trade over parts of my im
mediate district, ranging from Ohio
west to points along the Missouri riv
er. Indications all point to a lz to 21
day trip. With the head of every par
ty, an Association member and experi
enced traveler, definite routings, going
and coming, are being arranged for.
"With round trip fares permitting
the return journey by a different
route, it is ridiculous to suppose that
ny one interested in the western
boxed apples who goes west by way
of Wenatchee is not going to return by
way of Hood River. They will at
least stop over in Portlannd and visit
the valley by way of the Columbia
River Highway. Those who route out
by way of the Washington districts.
'We suggest, instead of associa
tions, shipping firms, and growers and
commercial bodies fighting for special
routing of delegates going to the . con
vention, that they bend their energies
toward securing straight fare and a
half from all roads instead of having
all in attendance pay full fare out and
then be required to have their tickets
validated for half fare back over the
same road."
FIKE GIVES FRIENDS
MEXICAN LOUPES
Jay Fike, of the Pacific Fruit & Pro
duce Co., who laBt year sold $35,000
worth of fruit products in Hood River,
was here last week distributing among
the trade the first Mexican cantaloupes
ever received in flood River. Ice
melons, selling at $10 per crate, were
distributed in considerable quantities
in Portland. Among the sales made to
local retailers last year by Mr. Fike
were 7J cars of watermelons. He de
clares that he expects to Bell 10 cars
this year.
"Hood River apple growers, said
Mr. Fike. certainly believe in recipro
city. They sell the California melon
growers apples in the winter months.
and in theummertime they eat melons
of the south. Proportionate to popula
tion, 1 do not believe a town on the
Pacific caost consumed rnnre melons
last year than did Hood River."
Mr. Fike while here remembered the
Glacier force with some of his fine
Mexican loupes.
Mcguire Dairy Scores Highest
While his visit of inspection here the
past week was characterized by action
in ordering a number of dairies to
clean up their premises, State Dairy
Inspector Duncan announced that Hood
River county should express a pride in
the West Side plant of W. is. AlcOuire,
"1 cannot remembar when I have
scored any Oregon dairy higher than
that of Mr. McGuire, said Mr. Dun
can. "His premises were in excellent
condition and his cows show an excel
lent treatment."
Mr. McGuire, who now milks six
cows, received numerous compliments
last year on completing his dairy barn.
"Pop" Elder Sustains Injury
John M. Elder, known to his former
University . of Oregon friends as
"Pop," almost lost a finger Thursday
when his right hand came in contact
with a rip saw at the Dee Mill of the
Orcitun Lumber Co., where be is
member of the office force. Except
for a bit of skin and flesh, one finger
was severed at a joint, and two other
fingers were badly cut. lie was
brought to the Cottage hospital, where
the wounds were dressed. Mr. Elder
is a member of the University of Or
egon chapter of Sigma Chi.
Dee Irrigation Hearing Tomorrow
The county court, which had been
petitioned to rail an election of land
owners of the Dee Flat community to
vote on establishing an irrigation dmt
rict there, postponed action in the mat
ter from the regular session of last
week until next Friday afternoon.
The law requires that the petitioners
appear before the court, a formality
that the owners overlooked.
The orchardista promoting the irri
gation district scheme, propose to pur
chase the plant of the Dee Power &
Irrigaiton Co., owned by the Oreogn
Lumber Co.
Lnmbago
This is a rheumatism of the muscles
of the back. It comes on suddenly and
is Quite painful. Every movement ag
gravates the disease. Go to bed, keep
quiet and have Chamberlain's Lini
ment applied and a quick recovery may
be expected. Mrs. r. J. lJann, tirock
port, N. Y.. writes: "1 can honestl?
say that Chamberlain's Liniment cured
me of lumbago a year ago last sum
mer. W hen 1 began using it, 1 was flat
on my back in bed and could not turn
to the left or right. I had a bottle of
Chamberlain's Liniment in the house
and this was applied to my back. It
promptly drove away the pains and
aches."

"It is verv seldom I get enthused

"For five years 1 was in such a bad

that might benefit me.
"But 1 saw a Tanlac statement
which so impressed me 1 bouhgt a bot
