The SAFETY and SERVICE of $100,000 FOR SPRAY EQUIPMENT THIS YEAR POWER DEVELOPMENT TO COST $10,000 "A few days ao I noticed in one of the Portland papers that growers of Hood River valley are spending about $100,000 for spray equipment," says Earl Franz. "While this looks like a big sum, and no doubt many of the people who saw this article feel it is slightly exaggerated, it is nevertheless very near correct. All spray pump manufacturing companies for the last three months have worked night and day to keep up with the big demand that has sprung up all over the north west. This demand can be traced to three or four reasons ; first; our orch ards have grown in size, and the trees in height, until a sprayer that did its work well to or three years ago is out oi uaie. rests nave Decome more prevalent, and spraying has to be done more thoroughly. To do this with larger trees and dense foliage, more pressure fa required. Not only is more pressure required for this reason, but with the use of guns. In the past few years, it has been found that it takes much more pressure to break up the spray into a silk-like mist. In break ing the spray into a mist it settles evenly over foliage and apples and be comes effective in the control of pests. Without this pressure the spray goes out in more of the form of rain, run ning off the tree, doing less effective work, and at the same time increasing tne amount or spray used almost a third. 'Many growers who have purchased new outfits this year claim that an outfit bought last year would have paid lor itaelt two or three times, the loss was so great in wormy apples. While we are lar behind on our de liveries, we have sent out to date sprayers and engines to the following: L-eroy Chads. DavidBon Fruit Com pany, (3), Dr. Collie, Dr. Hull, John Kath, Sam Freeman, Herman Deth- man. Bill Goodenough, H. M. Vannier, Forrest Moe, F. L. von Lubkin, J. W. Shipley, Blackwell Bros., (3) Krussow Bros., Z. Annala & Sons, Joe Kata yama, Hugo I'aasch and George Shep- pard. While we feel quite proud of our record, to date, it is due in a way to the fact that the Bean Company realizes. that Hood River is to the front in the use of spray equipment, and they keep in touch with what is wanted in capacity and pressure and build out fits with specifications which will meet this demand." Street rumors to the effect that the Pacific Bower & Light Co. plans the immediate resumption of construction of a new plant on the lower Hood river are said by the office of the concern to be erroneous. In 1912 and 1913 the concern began building a large plant here, work having stopped because of the great war militating against sale of securities. A crew of engineers, however, has been engaged here recently going over the old works and engaging in recon naissance along the river. The demand for power in the Hood River valley, the most hghly electrified rural com munity in the state, is reaching the point where r.pw development will soon be necessary. It is said. The comnanv. however, it is declared has no definite announcements to make at present. Reconstruction and the building of new lines this summer by the power company, according to announcements, will cost between $10,000 and $15,000. A large feeder line on the East Side will be entirely reconstructed. The company will connect the Upper Val ley system, now supplied through the East Side, with its plant at Tuckers Bridge. With two connections the power concern will be able to elimin ate breaks in Upper Valley service oc curring wun nut one connection. A number of short valley extension line are contemplated. MR. AND MRS. MOE RACK FROM SOUTH "It's not any colder here than it was in California, was the way A. 1). Moe, who with Mrs. Moe returned Fri day from a 10-week motor tour of southern California, greeted friends on arrival home. Mr. Moe declares that chill weather constantly pursued him and Mrs. Moe on their long jaunt, which carried them as far south as Tia Juana anil over into the Imperial Val ley and Mexican, Mex. "I was prepared," he says, "leav ing here in mid-January, with plenty of warm clothing for the high altitudes to be encountered on the way down. never found an opportunity to discard them. Heavy underwear and a sweat er coat were very appropriate at al times. Fires in southern California were just as inviting the past winter as we ever found them in Oregon." When Mr. Moe left it was necessary to detour over the North Hank High way, ferrying across the Columbia to Stevenson, because of the Columbia River Highway ice blockade. He had a puncture in a tire near Camas. The only other tire trouble on the long trip occurred while he was motoring home over the Highway from Portland. On the way up over the Pacific Highway, Mr. and Mrs. Moe stopped in Medtord, where they visited Mr, and Mrs. Crawford C. Eemmon and small daughter. Mr. I.emmon is now manager for Sgobel & Day. At Cor VSllil they stopped for a visit with Mrs. E. E. Gould at the Gamma Sigma Kapia house where she is house mother. Bank Shows Vinegar Products C. C.
