GIVE ANNUAL REPORT "If I could speak to everybody uer aonally who has rheumatism and atom ach trouble 1 would tell them to tak Tanlac, for 1 have tried it myself and have never found anything like it. caid Herman Hoetsch, 1421 West Sixtv first St., Seattle, Wash., well-know landscape gardener. "I hardly ever have a twinge of rheumatism now, although this trouble had made my life miserable for many years before I was fortunate enough to tinu lanlac and get reliel. "More than that, it has put stomach in such good order that I getting more enjoyment out of meals than in years. In fact. I feeling fine in every way." lanlac is sold in Hood River by the Kresse urug Co. Adv. my am my am Tax Meeting at The Dalles Today For the purpose of gathering at first hand information hb to tax conditions in various parts of Oregon, the State Tax Investigation Commission, will hold a public hearing at The Dalles today. The commsision desires to hear local tax problems and to this end has invited the county court, county as sessor and other officials to be at the hearing. Also the commission invites the presence of organizations of tax payers and of individual taxpayers. This commission was appointed by the 1921 session of the legislature to investigate the tax situation in the fccate, with a view of equalizing the tax burden. Members of the commis sion, each oi whom is a well-known citizen, serve without compensation, and are carrying out this investigation is a public duty. Reservoir Being Enlarged Work has been begun by Water Su perintendent W. T. Price and a crew f men in enlarging the reservoir of the old city water system, furnishing the town with a supply before the con struction of an enlarged system in 1913. The old reservoir will be en larged. It will provide adequate pro tection against fire in the lower city. The reservoir is located at Chautau qua Park, the town's largest recrea tion grounds, r lowering shrubs and rose hushes will be planted along fences following the completion of the work of enlarging the concrete basin. The following is the annual report of Duckwall Bros. : The past season we bought about 120 cars of apple from growers on a ensh basis, making a fixed price and taking all risks of rejections or other losses after the apples were accepted here. Of these there were about 20 cars that were packed Orchard Run face and fill jumble pack with several cars unclassified. The average on all apples shipped was $1,513 net to the grower. On our packed apples the average net to the grower was $1.6(54 for all varieties grade and sizes. While the firm tdiows only a nominal profit for the season, the growers have made good money on theee figures and we believe that all of our dealers will show a profit, which is a very healthy and encouraging condition for the com ing season. With a fair to good crop of apples in the east this year in prospect, it be hooves the grower this season to be careful in his orchard management, prune and thin well, and reduce his small apples and culls and C-grade to the minimum. The large sized high quality fruit will again show a profit the coming season. In regard to our Newtowns, wejwill never have a permanent market for this variety till we are able to control the storage scald that comes on this apple every year, appearing generally in January, but in favorable seasons a little later. This firm was the only one last year in Hood River to order the oil wrap in any quantity, as we believed that the cost of a little over one cent a box additional was well worth while, considering the benefits that would accrue if results were fa vorable. We now have Newtowns in both the nlain and oiled wraps in the middle west and east and should be ile to tell soon if the oiled wran as manufactured for us has been of anv benefit. The unafvorable report of a oeal firm last week, with all due re spect to them, we believe was a little pn mature, as the paper used was se cured from us well along in November. when most of the packing was over with, and results noticed may not be very accurate as to its true value. We sold quite a number of cars of Newtowns last year on the strength of the fact that thev were wr aimed in iled paper, which shows that if we can nice control this scald that we will have a demand for this varietv in do mestic markets where sales are now hard to make. But it is a fact that the reboring of cylinders of auto mobile motors restores them to their normal power. The little increase in the size of the rebored motors does not increase the power, but the fact that the motors are put in the condition in which, presumably, they left the factory, often accounts for what owners justly claim to be a noticeable increase in power. We have the most up-to-date facilities for reboring your cylinders. HOWELL BROS. FOURTH STREET Tel. 2551 f L. C. BALDWIN J. VV. SWOPE BALDWIN & SWOPE CONSTRUCTION CO.
