i'DUCKWALL MAKES
MARKET SUGGESTIONS
John C. Duekwall says that the sys
tem of cash buying, in his estimation,
will (row in favor in future years.
"This is the first year.J' nays Mr.
Duekwall, "that we have been work
ing on the basis of buying strictly for
cash. This system of doing bueiness is
coming in favor more and more each
year, as evidenced by the fact that our
volume of business this season is nea--ly
double that of last vear.
"We find, however, that the person
al visits that William S. Duekwall is
able to make to members of the trade
in the middle west every AO days, and
our advertising and featuring the prin
cipal varieties of this section are cre
ating a demand that is more than
equalling our increased shipments
We expect to handle over 130 cars this
season. We have also opened up
number of good markets in the south
where we have done very little busi
ness in the past, and next year we ex
pect a real demand in some sections
where we only shipped a few cars this
season. We have made a specialty of
the hpitzenburg, the Golden Ortley
the Newtown Pippin and the Arkansas
Black. This will be of benefit not only
to ourselves but to any shipper from
tins district. Whereas the advertising
or some particular brand without spe
lalizing variety is of small beneiit to
anybody.
Another factor that will help ship
pers is the raising of the standard of
quality of apples shipped, thereby in
creasing the demand. The new state
inspection law makes it possible for
any shipper to have cars inspected and
certified to as to quality, if the grade
is high. iMost of our shipments this
season have gone out under this certi
ncation, and we find that dealers at
the other end appreciate this and we
are given the preference when it comes
to competitive bidding, if our per
centage of culls, C-grade and five tier
apples is reduced to a minimum th
growers of this valley will find that
every year will be a profitable one.
This year was an exceptional one. Be
cause of the short crop in the eaht, the
decreased buying power of the public
and general depressed conditions the
Ogrsdt product was in demand be
cause it was cheap. In ordinary sea
sons, the east, our big market, wants
only large, g ood quality fruit, and we
will always be in the market for fruit
of this class.

It will be interesting to see what citi

Collie Stoops, who last week was
knocked out by a blow to the nose ap
plied by K. 0. Parker, The Dalles
negro, says he will fight the colored
lad here in the near future. Stoops,
who was a favorite in the ring against
the negro says he played in bad luck.
He declares that I'arker is a good fair
fighter, but that he allowed his own
guard to drop when he thought the
referee had called for a breakaway in
a clinch.
The Dalles Chronicle, telling of the
fight, says :
lhe semi-windup between Shade
Barker, of this city, and Collie Stoops,
of Hood River, was interesting while
it lasted, Stoops having the better of
the milling up to the- time he stopped
one of the colore.il boy'i powerful left
handed wallops with his chin. The
boys weighed in at 152 pounds each.
lhe hist round opened with both
boxers fiddling for an opening. Stoops
suddenly clipping the dusky battler
with a snaky riht to the head.
the latter was wary but willing and
took the punishment meted out to him
without showing the slightest distress.
1 he round was featured by several
rapid exchangee, mostly verbal, during
Which btoops was heard to inform his
opponent that he had a "mighty hard
head." Barker received this informa
tion with a sunny southern smile, and
ontinued the engagement unruffled.
Iloth boys showed cleverness, but it
was Moons round. In all the bovs
swapped eight solid punches during the
period.
1'at Foley was the bird that emu
lated that other little bird, and whis
pered into the ears of both boys during
the intermission, to the effect that ac
tions speak louder than words and that
was the sort of conversation the spec
tatnrs had paid to see.
Stoops led the lighting in the second
round, wun a conn. lent smile, hut in a
fast exchange Parker's left found his
bin, and he went down to defeat still
smiling.
Parker stood over his victim with a
ook of surprise, and the general opin
ion seems to be that while he earned
his victory he probably was the most
surprised person in the building.
Express Rates Are Equalized
"Recently, oh an appeal for coopers
tion from the Chamber of Commerce
at Bend, tin Hood River Commercial
Club appealed to the interstate Com
merce Commission to secure an equal
isation of freight rates between here
and Benil and White Salmon an. I Bend.
I'nder old expresi turilfs it cost 2t
cents, per 100 pounds, more to ship
apples from here to Bend than from
White Salmon. The loral and Bend
commercial bodies sought to have the
Hood River rate loweied to that of
White Salmon.
Secretary Crew last Thursday re
ceived a letter from the Interstate
C mmerce Commission announcing that
the rates had been equalized by in
creasing the White Salmon rate 26
cents per 100 pounds.

Renew Your Motor's Vitality
That old expression of workmen, whose occomplish
ments on your wares or your machines make them like new
again, to use their own expression, is much overworked.
But it is a fact that the'reboring of cylinders of auto
mobile motors restores them to their normal power.
The little increase in the size of the rebored motors
does not increase the power, but the fact that the motors
are put in the condition in which, presumably, they left
the factory, often accounts for what owners justly claim
to be a noticeable increase in power.
We have the most up-to-date facilities for reboring
your cylinders.

THE CHEAPER MEAT CUTS
We endeavor to make available at our market a ser
vice to fit every requirement of frugal and thrifty living.
Indeed, we urge that housewives give greater study and
care to the preparation of appetizing and wholesome meals
by the utilization of the cheaper cuts of meat. Much is
heard in these days of the high cost of meats. The de
mands of the public, the larger portion of patrons always
asking for the cuts of extra high quality, which are quick
ly and easily prepared, are reaponsible for much of the ac
cusations about the high cost of meats.
Learn how to prepare them and then try some of our
cheaper moat cuts. We have the less expensive cuts from
10 to 15 cents per pound.
