HOOD RIVER CRKAMERY GRAND OPERA IS COMING TO PORTLAND Portland is to Ket Ave Rreat per formances of the Chicago Grand Opera Company, March 22, 23. 24 and 2!). Under the terms of a contract recently signed the company will appear in the Portland Public Auditorium prior to the annual engagement in San Fran cisco and will make Portland the opera center of the Northwest for this sea son. The contract calls for the entire Chi cago company with Mary iiarnen, Muratore. Raisa, Baklanoff, Lazzari, Rimini and 40 other world stars, to gether with an orchestra of 70, ballet of 30, 72 stage hands, five conductors of music and a vast array of scenery and equipment to present onera on the same order it is shown in Chicago, New York and other eastern cities. The company will travel to the coast in three special passenger trains and one 8pecialtrain of 17 baggage cars'of scenery, costumes, etc. A total of 311 persons will be carried. Mary Garden, general director of the company, says the productions in I'ortland will be ex actly the same in magnitude and mag nificance as are the performances in the ea t. To get the engagement 40 business men of Portland have raised a guarantee fund of $72,500 which will be the cost of the five performances. The repertoire for Portland is as fol lows : Wednesday. March 22, Monna Vanna; Thursday, March 23, Lohengrin (in English) ; Friday, March 24, Komeo and Juliet; Saturday matinee. March 25. Thais; Saturday night, March 25, Aida. Mail orders for seats are now being received at the Auditorium in Port land. The engagement is to"be man aged by the World Attractions Co., of Portland, of which W. T. Pangle is manager with headquarters at the Auditorium. Irrigation Permits State Engineer Cupper stats that three permits for use of water in irri gation of land and for domestic supply were issued in Hood River county dur ing the last quarter t)f last year. They were issued to the following: P. H. Mohr, Upper Valley water from Elk Red spring for domestic sup ply and for irrigating 20 acres; C. Bickle. Cascade Locks, appropriation from Minott springs for domestic sup ply and irrigation of 2.5 acres at a cost of $100; A. T. Zeek, Belmont district, water from Ferguson creek for irriga tion of five acres at a cost of approxi mately $250. Scollard to Address Grange H. H. Scollard, a former newspaper man of Oregon City, will give an ad dress to the members of the Hood Riv er County Pomona Grange at the next monthly meeting February 8. The valley grangers will be hosts at the session of the Pine Grove Grange. A basket dinner will be served. Geo. A. Palmiter, master'of the Po mona Grange, states that work will be conducted in the Pomona degree, and a large class is expected. COW HUNTERS FIND SMALL SNOWFALL W. B. Graves, who is promoting or- i gamzauoii ui wm i ers' club, has received a letter from 1 jiuni..u loujptt in charge of the Port land office of the Predatory Animal Bureau of the United States Depart ment of Agriculture, who offers to aid Mr. Graves in building up a natural history museum for the proposed home of the new club. The club quarters, according to plans, will be situated on a 7-acre plot overlooking the Columbia River Highway just west of the city. Mr. Jewett in his letter praises Mr. Graves' plans for the nature club very highly. Mr. Graves has also had a letter of commendation from Frank Branch Rilev, who states that he will endeavor to' give publicity to the new organization in a series of eastern lec tures just begun. Pioneer River Captain Dead Captain Edward Pohley, 67 years old, an outstanding figure in early Co lumbia river steamboat history and an early resident of The Dalles, died Thursday evening at the home of a friend. Charles Walthers, in The Dalles, following a lingering illness. A sea-faring man during his youth, when he sailed twice around the world on English and German ships, in addi tion to serving in the German navy, Pohley earned the title of captain on the Columbia river when he was asso ciated with early river steamboating. CI KAN PLACE CLEAN GAM I City Wage Minimum $1 Although a reduction of the mini mum wage of city workers to $3.20 had been suggested, the city council has voted to maintain a $4 minimum the coming year. President Dewey Alford, of the local unit of the Amer ican Federation of Labor, appealed to the council to maintain the higher scale. The county court recently reduced the minimum daily wage to $3.2o per day. East Side Farm Loan (Hiicers Named At the annual met ting, the East Fork Farm Ixian Association Friday named officers for the ensuing year as follows: A. I. Mason, president: J. L Hershner, vice president, and R. E. Scott fecretary. The East Side organization has in effect loans aggregating $170,000. Ap plications for additional loans, totaling $40,000 have been made. FIRE SURVEY REPORT HAS PRAISE FOR CITY A survey corps from the state fire marshal's office, here recently in an in vestigation which lasted more than a week, have recommended in their re port to State Fire Marshal Parbur that HoodjRiver take steps to remove old sheds and woodenJbuildinK within the limits of the business district. The report recommends that the city pro vide some regular service for the re moval of garbage and litter. The de puty fire marshals also declare that the city should provide at an early date a fire alarm system. The report recommends a motor truck to be equipped as a hook and ladder truck, a life net and life line. The volunteer fire department is praised very highly in the refiort, which also declares that the citizens display a willingness to cooperate in eliminating fire hazards. Officers Find ((uarantine Enforced County Health Officer Edgington, who with Deputy Sheriff Sloat was dispatched on instructions from County Judge Hasbrouck to investigate alleged infraction of quarantine rules in the Upper Valley, where scarlet fever has prevailed among children reported last week that the seriousness of the situa tion had been exaggerated. The offi cers stated to Judge Hasbrouck, who has acted on complaints from the dis trict, that they found quarantines as established being enforced. Judge Haliroiick stated that scarlet fever has appeared in one family. He does not anticipate, however, that it will be necessary to close the Parkdale srhool. 1 DiS-l tv A.
