HUGGINS 300 GROWERS AT PRUNING SESSION A successful pruning rchool, with an aggregate of more than 300 orchardista in attendance, was held at 1'arkdale and here last week. The Oregon Agri cultural College extension bureau, in cooperation with the Hood River Ex periment Station, had charge of the work, Clayton L. Long, representing the college and Leroy Childs and Gor don G. Brown the station. The time was divided between lectures and field ilemonstrations. Iv5r. Long outlined the necessary work of pruning from the time an ap ple tree is planted until it reaches ma turity. He stated that the first three years should he devoted to building the frame work and heading hack the tree. After that he stated no heading back was needed. He advised keeping the tree open by thinning out secondary limbs. Thus, Mr. Long said, heavy fruiting will be produced. He also pointed out that the leaders are kept pulled down by weight of the fruit and trees do not grow to excessive height. Mr. Long severely condemned the sys tem of heading back of leaders which is practiced by Borne growers here. He said that the cutting of these leaders prevents the bending of the main branches and results in no opening or spreading of the tree which is neces sary to obtain regular, heavy produc tion. The Lower Valley demonstrations were held in the East Side orchard of C. A. Reed. On the West Side the tract owned by S. G. Oxborrow in the Belmont district was visited. New town, Spitzenburg, Delicious apples and d'Anjou pears, the valley's chief varieties, were uiven the most atten tion. Growers in attendance requested mat the pruning school be made an annual event. Steps have been taken to comply with their desires. DANIELS FASTED DAYS AT A TIME Eats Anything He Waists And Is Main Ing In Weight and strength Every Day ADDITIONAL APPLES TO GO BY WATER Apple shipping concerns are now as mblinff fruit at 1'ortland terminals for loading aboard the steamers Mor dyke and Nitcheroy, due to sail for hug land by way of the Panama Canal early in January. The Apple Growers Association will Bhip 10,(100 boxes O: each of the steamers. Dan Wuille & Co. will send 80.0000 boxes on the Nitcheroy. While Dan Wuille & Co. expect to end their direct water exports with the January shipments, the Association plans on shipping 15,000 boxes in Feb ruary and 10,000 in March, bringing their totals to 140.000 boxes for the season. Dan Wuille & (x., who have handled applea from Underwood and White Salmon as well as here, state that their total direct water exnorts to England for the season will reach 120, 000 boxes. Worth Considering The question is not so much how you contract a cold, but how to get rid of it with the least loss of time and in convenience. It vou will consider the experience of others under similar cir- cumatances, who have been most sue cessful In checking colds, in their be ginning, you will secure a bottle of Chamberlain's ('oliirh Remedy without dlay, and use it faithfully. There are many families who have used this preparation successfully for years and hold it in high esteem. It is excellent. Daniels, 1600 S. Hope St., Los Angeles, Calif. "For two years my stomach was all out of order. After meals I bloated up with gas. had a burning sensation in the pit of my stomach and just felt miserable. 1 lost my appetite com pletely and went for four or five days at a time hardly eating a mouthful. 1 never ate a bite of breakfast and kept losing in weight until I only weighed one hundred and twenty-eight pounds, less than 1 had ever weighed In my life. Hut I certainly have an appetite now, feince 1 have taken Tanlac, and every symptom of indigestion has left me, 1 sleep good every night and get up feeling all ready to enjoy a good breakfast. I am gaining in weight and strength right along and am won derfully improved in every way. I consider myself lucky to have found such a medicine as Tanlac." Tanlac is sold in Hood River by the Kresse Drug Co. Adv. Mr. Crosby Writes From Maine Brooks, Maine, December 27, 1921. Editor Glacier: 1 will write a few more lines to my old friends in Hood Kiver. Alter my visit ol six weeks in Aroostook county and New Hampshire and Massachusetts with mv brothers and a sister, one brother whom I had not seen for about 4.r years, I returned to Brooks November 21, in time for a good Thanksgiving dinner, so you see 1 am not.missing any good eats. I took Christmas dinner with my sister, Ruth. It has been just A'A years since I took Christmas dinner with her. There were 10 of us at table and there was enough left to feed 10 more when we were through. 1 hen came the tree. which pleased the children very much. and 1 am afraid we were all children about that time. We are having a very pleasant winter here so far; a lit tie cold at times; 17 below zero is the coldest as yet. 1 notice the old timers seern to enjoy the cold better than I. but I am getting used to the cold and don't notice it much now. The price of apples seems to be ad vancing here. No. 1 naldwins are worth $7 per barrel in Boston. They say they are not keeping well ; rotting in storage. I am thinking apples ought to bring good money to the people in Hood River this year. I heard one man say tie realized the best price on nil crop this year he ever had. Of ourse the crop of apples was very short here this year. J. R. Crosby. Seasonable Remedies LAXATIVE COLD BREAKERS. K-C COUGH SYRUP. (The old reliable remedy. ) NYAL'S LAXACOLD. OREGON. Renew Your Motor's Vitality That old expression of workmen, whose occomplish ments on your wares or your machines make them like new aain, to use their own expression, is much overworked. But it is a fact that the reborinp; of cylinders of auto mobile motors restores them to their normal power. The little increase in the size of the rebored motors does not increase the power, but the fact that the motors are put in the condition in which, presumably, they left the factory, often accounts for what owners justly claim to be a noticeable increase in power. We have the most up-to-date facilities for reborinp; your cylinders. HOWELL BROS. FOURTH STREET Tel. 2551 Yes, We Are Giving You DELIVERY SERVICE from now on at 9:30 a. m. and 2.30 p. m.
