L. H. MUGGINS Phone 2134 (By Nelson Emry) Lumbering is the second most lm portant industry in Hood River county In 1920 nine sawmills operated in the county, employing approximately 800 men and producing a total of 48,000,000 feet of lumber. I lie gross sum re ceived bv workers in the industry dur ing the season amounted to something like 900,000. Most of this money was spent in Hood Kiver county through the regular channels of trade with the result of increased business for all con cerned. In 11121 conditions were considerably different. I he market value of I urn her had dropped to t:ie point where none but the best equipped and most efficient nulls were able to run. Ihe railroads were not placing tie contracts and many small mills dependent on this class of trade were forced to re main closed throughout the season. The few small mills which did operate cut only enough to supply local de mand. The big mill at Cascade Locks, the Wind Kiver Lumber Co., started running in the spring at a loss in order to avoid a still heavier loss in Iocs al ready cut. When the market failed to pick up they shut down about June and have not reopened. Three hundred and twenty-five men were thrown out of employment and a large volume of county business was cut oft. Authorities In the milling game are today unanimous in the opinion that the general depression in the east is over and that heavy eastern buying will heirin in early spring. Railroads are expected to again go into the mar ket with tie contracts and both large and small mills are lonkintr forward to a prosperous year in 1922. This will mean advances in lumber prices. In fact, many important items have al ready shown marked advances, but it should also mean a larger volume of business in all lines and more mnnev in circulation in Hood River county. LUMBER CO. TO RE PAIR STORM DAMAGE I luring the past several weeks, ac cording to employes of trie lumbering concern, crews of the Oregon Lumber Co. have been engulfed clearing up wreckHge left by the November sleet storm and the llooil conditions of Hood river that resulted when the thaw came. Debris of a trestle and bridg. of a logging road, demolished by Hood waters and driftwood of the east fork of Hood river, have been cleared away. Hie roof of the planer building, de moilshed by the weight of the sleet and ice, lias been removed, and prep arations have been made for recon struction of a dam, the superstructure of which was destroyed by the flood. hull crews will be engaged on the work of repair immediately after the lirM of the year, it ia said, and th company expects to resume shipment of lumber bv February 1. Ihe Dee mill, however, will not resume opera lions until weather conditions will per mit logging in the high altitude of the west fork country next spring. Taking D aperatc Chances It is true that many contract severe colds and recover from them without taking any precaution or treatment, and a knowledge of this fact leads others to take their chances instead of giving their colds the needed alien tion. It should be borne in mind that every cold weakens the lungs, lowers the vitality, makes the system less able to withstand each Mice. cling at tack and paves the way for the more serious diseases. I an you adorn to take such desperate chances when Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, famous for its cures of bad colds, may be had for a tritle. But it is a fact that the reboritlg of cylinders of auto mobile motors restores them to their normal power. The little increase in the size of the rebored motors does not increase the power, but the fact that the motors are put in the condition in which, presumably, they left the factory, often accounts for what owners justly claim to be a noticeable increase in power.
