Rev. and Mrn. W. E. Rambo, for
merly of Maker, where Mr. Ramho
was pastor of the Christian church,
who have just returned from three
years' service with the Near Hast Re
lief Association in Armenia, have ar
rived here to aid in raising funds from
this county for the Oregon organiza
tion for Near Hast Relief. In early
life Rev. and Mrs. Rambo were mis
sionaries of the Christian church in
India. In the great famine of Damon
they took in ttousands of orphans,
founding an orphanage which remains
until this day.
The returned relief workers were at
first in charge of an orphanage at
llarounie, not far from Tarsus, home
of Saul. The Turkish battle lines ad
vanced, anil llarounie was besieged.
They escaped by night with their Or

RANCHER OPPOSED TO
TAX FOR OREGON
(My R. E. Scott)
Editor of The Telegram : A hundred
and fourteen years ago Mr. Eppes, of
Virginia, son-in-law of President Jef
ferson, said in congress:
"if there is any principle which
ought to be hooted at in a republican
government, it is that to preserve
peace we should be prepared for war.
Sir, it is this very principle which is
the source of all the miseries of
Europe."
I read recently and many times in
the past of the agitation to get the
battleship Oregon into Oregon waters
and there keep her as an everlasting
monument to her prowess in battle
It seems to me that this agitation
out of keeping with the meeting going
on at Washington. When our repre
sentatives at that meeting propose to
scrap new ships on the altar of peace
why should Oregon propose to spend
$15,000 on a monument to keep alive
the memories of war!
One of the reasons for scrapping the
navies is that the expense of keeping
them leads toward bankruptcy. Sui
pose each state had a battleship Ore
I gon to spend $15,000 a year upon, or an
amount in proportion to her popula
tion ; tne sum total would be near
$2,000,000 a year for the country.
ir we are going to start, let s go
we will never arrive. I do not believe
the people of Oregon would ever vote
to spend $15,000 a year keeping alive
this spirit of war, if the legislature
would refer the matter to them.
NIGH SCHOOL NOTES
or
(By Dorothy Frey)
This is Christmas week in the
schools, and Christmas week is chil
dren's week everywhere. Every room
of the Cue primary and Park Street
schools contains a Christmas tree be
coming more and more resplendent, as
pupils and teachers add the glittering
decorations. Suitable exercises will
be held Friday afternoon, in each
school followed by an early dismissal
ine nign school had a short program
at assembly Wednesday. The Junior
high pupils will have a party with
their teachers Thursday night from
to 9, to which parents are invited. All
schools will close Friday for the Christ
mas vacation and resume again Tues
day, January 8. Many of the teachers
whose homes are elsewhere will leave
Hood River Friday evening. Several
are planning to attend the Oregon
State Teachers Association in Portland
December 27-30. County Supt. Gibson
and City Supt. Cannon will go as dele
gates from Hood River.
H. J. Frederick is busy with a force
of men putting in new truss work to
support the roof on the old part of the
high school building, a part of which
was damaged by the last snow.
Miss Helen Frease, of O. A. C, ar
rived Saturday night and took up her
duties in the home economics depart
ment Monday morning in the place of
Miss Grace Smith, who will be absent
for some weeks on account of illness.
Miss Frease was assisted Monday by
Mrs. H. G. Cooper, who had charge of
the classes last week.
Miss Ethel Kelleher was absent from
the Park street school Monday because
of illness. Mrs. Clara Rowland was
substitute.
Miss Marion Howe was absent from
Coe primary three days last week. Al
berta Carson was substitute.
Miss Helen Hershner. of the high
school, was a substitute for Miss Em
ma SchmiedeskHmp, who was absent
two days last week from the Park
Street on account of bronchitis.
The high school auditorium was the
scene of a fast, exciting basket ball
game last Friday night. The Blue
Diamond aggregation walked on the
high school boys to the tune of 35 to
20. The game was won as the result
ot greater experience. It was featured
by many sensational shots by both
teams. The stars for the Blue Dia
mond team were the Pyers brothers,
Otto and Jack. The latter formerly
played on the high school team. John
son and Swick outshone the rest of the
high school galaxy by their consistent
playing and sensational shooting. The
high school boys were handicapped by
the lack of team practice. They have
a wealth of material and Hood River
may expect great things of her high
school team this season. The Blue Di
amond aggregation looks to be about
the best representative town team that
has been put out for some time.
Hood River should support athletics
more, its teams lack the moral sup
port which constitutes the winning
spirit. Let's go, Hood River, and beat
The Dalles in everything; in spirit,
progressiveness, and in being good
sportsmen.
The members of the annual staff are
all busy laying the foundation for the
1921-22 Mas-cot. It is their ambition to
make this publication excel all its pre
decessors. The first official meeting of
the members was called Wednesday of
ntt week by Miss Frances Fuller, editor-in-chief.
Mr. Brode was chosen
facultv advisor to the staff. A meet
ing of the management was held in the
office of Supt. Cannon Thursday when
gome definite plans were made.
Truman Butler gave the third of a
series of 10 lectures on banking at as
sembly Wednesday of last week. Other
numbers of the program were: Piano
solo, Clifton Emmel, and a song by
eight members of the girls' glee club.
