The discussion brought out many things of interest to grow ers, especially along lines of increasing the consumption of our product and its accompanying return. It was the unanimous opinion of all growers pres ent that the time is now ripe for the formation of an 01 ganizat ion of North west producers whereby ways und means may be devised which will en able them to mure extensively adver tise and distribute their rapidly in creasing product, the Northwest boxed apple. With this idea in mind a com mittee representing the interested . 1 ,. 1 . - urns annolntao. This committee made up for the most part, of growers, WHS as follows: .1. Ln nomas, u ton. Wash. ; W. 11. Wicks, Idaho; C. L. Shovell, Montana; A. r. Harss, Van couver. B. C ; E. A. Wiggins, Wash ington, and Leroy ( lnhis, ol Oregon. The duties of this committee are to place before the various shippers and growers, both private and cooperative organizations, the purposes of this movement, they, as growers and ship pers, to send representatives to the first meeting on organization which is to be held in Spokane early in February. It is not the intention or purpose of this organization to undertake the marketing of this otiput of the North west or todisrupt or change in any way preterit marketing organizations, but to develop an organization of fruit growers and dealers who will standard ize their product with icference to quality ami grade and to finance a project which will permit extensive national and internaional advertising of our one great commodity, the Northwest box apple. The needs for concerted effort in the proper advertising of this commodity are many and ate becoming more an parent each year. A glance at grow ers' returns which have been received during the past few years show that some radical changes and improve ments must take place In order to pre sence this great industry and place it upon a profitable basis. The causes for the present existing conditions can be largely placed upon the shoulders of the fruit growers themselves and can be largely corrected by them if they are willing to do so. Our apple ton nage has increased tremendously dur ing the past five years. We have paid particular attention to cultural prac tices and have developed quality and quantity production to the highest standard existing in trie world. The fruits of this effort are particu larly gratifying and we find the North west producing 40 per cent of the entire production of the country. But what has been done to coordinate this pro duction with systematic advertising and distribution'.' Nothing. On the contrary the little advertising that has been done has had a tendency to bring about competition in box producing sections, one with another and a natur al competition in our common market resulting in injury to all. During the period of infancy in the box apple in dustry this local competition in adver tising, in quality, and quantity of out putput added vigor to the game; today it is killing it. The correction of this difficulty rests largely with us as f r lit growers. With our interests combined anil coordinated in a way which will nermit of a wider distribution and consumption brought about through channels of vigorous advertising we will be able to face the future with its increasing perplexities in a way consistent with modern bus iness practices, the improvement of our present marketing conditions, as well ss the production of a perfect product rests with the grower himself. Collectively great strmes can be made in improving the situation. Acting in dividually we will continue to receive the discouraging teturns with which we are familiar. PRUNING SCHOOL WILL BE HELD (By Gordon ( i Brown) Word has just been received from C. L. Long, extension horticulturist of the Oregon Agricultural College, that he has no open dates in his schedule before February 25, which he can give to Hood River for the pruning school. It will be remembered that this school was postponed on account of the big snow storm of two weeks ago. He has been generous ennugh, however, to offer to come to Hood River during hu Christmas vacation in order to give this section the benefit of his services. He has agreed to come and spend four days with us, December 27 to 30. In view of these facts it is fitting that Hood River lend every support in making this school a success. Every body is invited to come to the meetings and get the most out of them. It is not hoped to make expert pruners out of amateurs in four days but it has been demonstrated that the funda mentals of pruning can be grasped very quickly and put into practical use by those who come prepared to apply themselves. The four days will be scheduled off in a similar manner to that previously annoum'ed. l'arkdale will be given the first two days, Tuesday and Wednes dav, December 27 and 28, and Hood River the remaining two days, De cember 82 and 30. The first half day in each section will be reserved for preliminary dis euision indoors, Mr. Long will briefly outline the work at that time and the prlneplss involved. All growers should make it a point to attend the indoor sessions because there will lie no fur- ther opportunity for detailed discus- ion In the field. The remaining one and one half days in each section will j be spent In the orchard where demon strations hihI actual work liy those at tending will be carried out. Please bring your own pruning outfit. This will include long and short handled shears, saws. etc. The indoor session at l'arkdale will be held in the Mclsaac hall and the 0M in H00J River in Li ! brary hall, the former in the motning j of December 27 and the latter in the ' morning of December 29. These meet ings will open promptly at '.) a. m. Be ion hand. Upon the success of this .. ... r ... J school depends trie iuiure 01 sucn dem onstrations In Hood River valley. STORED APPLES PRESENT A PROBLEM While the apple market has shown a material strengthening the past sev eral weeks in heavy distributing points on the Atlantic seaboard and in Chi cago, C. W. McCullagh declares that it will be difficult to tell how strong the demand will develop later on in the season because of the heavy storage of Nurthwe tern apples. "If all the carloads of apples that have been shipped had been sold and were now going into consumption," says Mr. Mc( ullngh, "marketing con ditions would now be exceedingly rosy. Hut there is no way of us telling how much of this storage stuff is going to be placed on the market later. We do not know what percentage of shipping concerns are holding stored stocks for the anticipated rise. For the late keeping varieties that have been stored to bring in returns on a basis equal t fruit that has sold at lower prcet) earli er in the season, the price must be high enough to absorb tbe storage charges and pay for interest Ml 'he investment."
