Snow Emphasizes Tunnel's Beauty
The hcaped-un drifts of sleet and
deep formations of ice crust left in the
waki of the recent snowstorm in the
vicinity of Mitchells Point tunnel on
the Highway were remarkable, accord
ing to William Sylvester, who with
William Marshall hiked on skiis to the
tunnel the week following the storm.
The sleet, like dry sand, had rolled
down the sides of the overhanging
dill's, according to Mr. Sylvester, until
it had tilled both approaches to the
famed open - window bore. With an
east wind prevailing the open windows
had received deposits of snow that
looked like pyramids. The snow, like
a volume of bulk wheat, had rolled
back onto the tunnel pavement, block
ing the roadway, lhe thaw had set in
when Mr. Marshall and Mr. Sylvester
weie at the tunnel. The vaulted rock
lOof, he says, was leaking like a sieve.
Indeed, Mr. Sylvester says, the water
was pouring through the strata of ba
salt in such portion that on could have
taken a shower bath in any spot on the
pavement Moor.
Mr. Sylvester carried his kodak with
him on the hiking expedition and se
cured some remarkable photographs
He declares that he never expects to
see the tunnel more beautiful than it j
was with its emphasizing snowbanks.
