I Valors in RLAL EST AT K Fruit and Farm Lands was living at Hood River but waa m;ikin improvements on a preemption claim at Deschutes. 1 had gone to mv claim just before the bi'K storm of broke. My claim was on a high hill overlooking the Columbia and the storm commenced while I was working there. For three days and nights it snowed furiouslv, and on the morning of the fourth day I started intending to catch a train into The I l!.ll..u IA I ,. ..w I .. If ..... ""in ii, i tt c. a ( ui nan - naj I flown tka li i I I I aiua natwrKl in u annm. ...... t. .iic 1 1 1 1 1 . un Liiuiib in u cun slide and carried to within a few feet of the station. As the snow was very light I sulFered no inconvenience fur ther than U-ing somewhat smothered and considerably frightened, and I was about 20 minutes ahead of a train go ing into the Dalles, and which was the last one over the road for two weeks. "When 1 reached The Dalles 1 learned that a passssentrer train that had left for Portland that morning was stuck in the snow somewhere below Hood River and that a snow plow and a crew were to be sent after it the following morning. 1 made arrange ments to be one of the crew. The shop crew worked all night constructing a snow plow attachment to the front of a locomotive. With this plow and nine additional locomotives to help push it we lett 1 he Dalles at H o clock, ex pecting to go right through, but in stead we hung up at the (irst cut, where we ran into about 10 feet of drifted snow. It was necessary to shovel the engines clear of snow so they could back up and take a run at the drift again with sufficient force to push through. 1 his operation was re peated at everv cut, so we were all day making Hood River, 22 miles. t rom Hood Kiver on we were able to make good time, as much of the road was over trestles, where there was no snow. We reached Viento sta tion running about 25 milea an hour, and there we met our Waterloo. The last train was stuck in the snow a mile below Viento, and Conductor Lyons, expecting a relief expedition, had come back to Viento. Hearing our approach, he climbed on the water tank so he could get a clear view of the track, to give the danger signal. When the en gineers saw the red light and heard the pistol shots they thought thev were running into the passenger train and applied the emergency brakes. This, with the hve feet of snow, caused them to stop in a jilfy. rorsome reason, the last engine had broken loose and, with the bag gage car and crew, was running about 200 yards behind. Having a clear track and the baggage car pushing him, he could not stop, and came on, striking the nine locomotives with force enough to knock nearly all of them off the track. By morning every locomotive that was not wrecked was dead for lack of fuel and water and the relief expedition had only increased the seri ouanaji of the situation by bringing about 60 more men and no provisions for feeding anyone. The next morning Headmaster Don ly asked for someone to go back t( Hood River with a message. I volun teered. It was still snowing furiously, the temperature below zero and th wind blowing a gale, so it was not pos sible to sec 100 feet ahead. 1 here was no sign of a train ever having passed over the mad, and every cut was filled with fine, drifting snow, sometimes 20 et deep. I made Hood River, seven miles, in eight hours and delivered my meraase, Word came immediately from 1 he Dalles to send provisions at anv cost. Captain Coe organized a rev of 16 men and we left the next morning with cooked provisions. 1 nis w hi found impractical, as everything ooked froze before we got through, so we took uncooKeu supplies inereauer and the cooking was done at the Viento section house. "We made a trip every day for 10 ays and it never let up snowing and blowing during all that time. As the O.-W. R. & N. had wrecked its entire equipment, those .'WO passengers would have been there until a Chinook wind thawed tl.em out if Superintendent Hucklev bad not come down from the Northern Pacific with atnowplow and tramload of men and provisions and ut a wav through to Portland. This storm came during the first weeks of December. Apple Shipments Are Light Shipments of apples from here the past two eks have been negligible. Just as the D.-W. R. & N. Co., emerg ing from the paralyzing effects of the ileal storm, were getting ready to handle the L adings of local shippers. Hoods again tied up the tracks. Com parative!) few apples, too, have been delivered, liars the snowstorm began November 1!, by growers to shipping concerns. The Apple (Jrowers Association re ported Bp to Saturday that its total de liveries have reached 1.207.7S1 boxes, and its shipments aggregate 754,533 boxes. Menominee Changed to Meno Meno is the new name of a siding of the O-.W. R. &. N. Co.. the second wi .-t of H,Hi,i River. The name was shortened from Menominee. The plant was formerly the location of one of the J valley's largest sawmills.
