They have played for Mrs. Potter Palmer, Mrs. Marshall Field, Mrs. Harold McGormick and other widely known social leaders. In order that everyone may enjoy their music we are going to present them at popular prices. To do so we must have the support of the entire valley as the only way we were able to prevail upon their agent to let us show at these prices, was to assure him that with even our big seating capacity the house would be crowded. Now HOOD RIVER, show us you want these attractions. THE HOOD RIVER AMUSEMENT CO. HOOD RIVER ODELL Because it ia located in a kind of gulch and hidden from the city's main thoroughfares, even Hood River people have no comprehensive idea of the magnitude of the Hood River Canning company s plant. J he concern began operations nine years ago in a two story building 50 by 100 feet. Today it requires three additional structures to house the equipment and activities of employes of the canning concern two 50 by 100 feet, one two stories and the other a single story, and a sin gle story structure 120 by 40 feet. The Hood River valley attracted E. B. Cloud, widely known for his ability as a canner on the Pacific Coast, be cause of the excellence of the Clark seedling strawberry. Mr. Cloud, since he has been here, has been constantly experimenting with new methods of processing the valley's product. His perseverance has resulted in a straw berry firm enough to be used bv candv- makers for dipping chocolate. The plant's output of berries this year has been processed. In kefirs thev will be shipped to candy manufacturers in nearly every state of the Union. the canning company is now engatred on a run of approximately 500 tons of appies. iweniy women and 15 men are engaged in eendinsr an endless row of apples into gallon tin cans. The cull fruit is dumped into a washing vat. It is graded, the smaller apples being returned to a cider mill. Peels and cores from the larger apples are also utilized in the cider crusher. Af ter the apples have been peeled and the cores removed, the apples are sent by belts to girls aud women who trim all bruises or any portion of skin that may have been left bv the oarinir Knives. From the trimmers the apples go to a long endless belt, where they are carried through steam and thor oughly cleansed. They are then packed in the cans and sealed. The apples are cooked as they pass through vats of boiling water. 1 he canning plant is now engaged exclusively on bpitzenburgs. Ixica housewives declare the Spitzenburg lavome cooKing apple, as it remains whiter. A large percentage of the trade, however, prefers the Newtown Ihe apples are shipped to resaturants and hot' l.i, where thev are preferred n pie-making to fresh apples. storage rooms or the plant now con tain 15,000 boxes of apples. Calls are being sent out for additional help, and crews will be doubled soon. Work at the canning factory will last unti march 1. As the tables where the women, seated, work, are comfortably neaieu, tne canning factory is appeal ing as a wintertime vocation. MODERN V0YAGEUR MAKES CALL HERE M. J. Lorraine, civil engineer of Al hambra, Calif., the modern vovageur, who June 15 set out from Canal Flats, B. C, on the headwaters of the Colum bia, arrived in Hood River Friday, having made the 1,200 mile distance in a rowboat of the dory type. He built the boat himself on Canal Flats. "It has been the greatest experience of my life," says Mr. I.orraine, who is b years old. "1 have lost 35 pounds, but 1 was never more fit physically in my life. The wear on my nerves was rather trying when I was negotiating parts of the river where rapids had to be shot and where every minute of the time 1 had to keep my eyes open and my hands ready for action. The rest of my journey will be comparatively easy. I am going on to Astoria and there will catch a boat for Los An geles. "I would have been to Astoria long ago but for the bad weather encoun tered. The rains on the headwaters were terrific this summer." Mr. Lorraine portacred but about three miles of the entire distance. The longest portage was for a mile and a half at Surprise Rapids. He carried for a half mile around Kettle Falls. A portage was also required at The Little Dalles near the Canadian bor der. Mr. Lorraine says he made the trip for the purpose of writing of his experiences. Saturday Specials Our Very Best Bacon, per lb. " " 44 Lard, 6 lb. 44 44 44 Lard, 10 lb.
