CODLING MOTH
NEEDS ATTENTION
(l!y Lever? Childs)
Up to the present time a large . p
rentage of the orchards have he
fairlv free from codling moth injury
However, this fact should not he tnken
as an index that they will continue tr
he so until apples are harvested. The
first brood worms entered the apples
over a very long period during the
spring due largely to intervals of cool
and warm weather. As a result of
this irregularity the activities of the
second brood of moths are going to be
much the same, all indications point
nig to the tact that worms will be en
tering the fruit well up to harvest
time. Due to these conditions it will
be decidedly practical to make another
application of arsenate of lead in order
to keep down the damage that may be
caused.
Many growers will find it difficult
operating their sprayers, due to the
presence of props and heavily laden
trees. Even with this condition exist
ing, extra pains must be taken in order
to worn the sprayer through the or
chard. Orchardists who are now prop
ping should keep this in mind and ar
range their crops so that the sprayer
may De driven through.
! ruin the present development of
the worms it appears that a great
many eggs will be hatching about the
first of September, and it will probably
be advisable to spray sometime be
tween the date of August 25 and Sep
tember 1. More specific dates will be
given out later. At that time many
growers will notice that a good deal of
spray wtill remains on the fruit. Nev
ertheless, owing to the fact that the
apples have expanded considerably
since this application was made and as
this spray does not expand with the
growth of the fruit much tif the sur
face will be unnrotected. This cannot
he relied upon to destroy a very great
precentage of the young worms. In
order to avoid a blotchy appearance of
the apples due to the thick coating of
spray at this late date, our Station is
recommending the addition of pounds
ot calsium casemate to each 100 gal
lons of spray material. This material
acts as a, spreader and gives the apples
a more even and much leas noticeable
covering of spray. The arsenate of
lead should be used at the regular
strength of 2 pounds to 100 gallons of
water.
A careful examination of many or
chards that have been recently sprayed
with Hordeaux and lead shows clearly
that growers are not spraying the tops
of the trees as thev should be doing.
Carelessness of this sort will mean
many wormy apples which could other
wise have been kept clean by giving
the work more careful attention.
Growers must take more time in spray
ing the tops of the trees than they are
now doing if the desired results are to
be obtained.
