ESTIMATE OF YEAR'S APPLE CROP GIVEN (The following report is issued by F. L. Kent, agricultural statistician of the Bureau of Markets.) 1919 and 1920 carlot apple shipments given below an; taken from reports to the Bureau of Markets, SrxikHiie office, by billing station agents. The figures represent actual shipments from July 1, 1919 to June :(), 1920, and from July 1, 1920 to March 1, 1921. The 1920 column also includes an estimate of shipments, March 1, 1921 to June 30, 1921. Very few districts make ship ment after March 1. The 1919 records show that only about 370 cars were shipped between March 1 and June 30, 1920, and 354 of these cars were shipped from Hood Kiver. The 1921 spring shipments were much less than those of 1920. These 1919 and 1920 records serve as a basis for estimating the 1921 croji Apples Fears County Carload shipments Tons (7.r0 bxs) 1921 1920 1919 1921 (est.) (est.) Elsewhere in the district, there is but little increase over last year's crop prosiHJct, in fact, some sections will probably have less apples than last year. Unfavorable climatic conditions during the blossoming period are held responsible for a light setting of fruit and a heavy "June drop." Fungus growth and insect injury are reported as being more prevalent than usual. In the better cared for orchards much of the affected fruit has been elim inated during thinning. A good many orchards are not receiving their usual care this season. The pear crop is generaly way below normal, being probably 60 to 75 per cent of last year. Prune are also way below normal, particularly on the older trees, and In the orchards at the higher elevations. Upmua Vallcv : Apples promise a very substantial increase over last year, but, "scab will be slightly worse and there will be a larger percentage of (' grade." Fears will probably be considerably leu than last year, and promise about 50 per cent of a normal crop, aitnougn reports irom one dis trict estimate that the crop will be 20 per cent larger than last year. Fear quality is hardly up to normal due to presence of some scab. 1 runes prom ise a full crop of l'etites, and about. 75 per cent of a full crop of Italians. Frune sizes will probably run larger than usual. Some old orchards have rather light crops, and there was some frost damage jn a few localities. Mois ture conditions have been better than usual. Southern Oregon : The apple crop is now estimated at 25 to 40 per cent in crease over last year, but pears prom ise only 55 to 60 per cent of the 1920 crop. Fears did not set as well as usual ana tnere was some nan Damage In early June in some of the heaviest producing sections. Size and quality of both apples and pears promise to be quite satisfactory. Hood Kiver: Well informed local orchardists are of the Opinion that -the number of individual apples will be about the same as last year, but it is expected that the size will be larger and the actual number of boxes will be 10 to 15 per cent greater than last year. The average size of the 1920 crop was the smallest of any during the past six years, the percentage of 5 tier apples handled by the Associa tion in 1920, being 25 per cent as com pared with 12J per cent for the two years preceding. 1920 quality was also low, the percentage of Extra Fancy being 44 in 1920 as compared with an average of 52 per cent for the three years preceding. Both climatic condi tions and the labor situation are held responsible for the low 1920 averages. The pear crop of 1921 is estimated at about 50 per cent of normal. Eastern Oregon : In Umatilla county the Milton- Kreewater apple reort is. "The nop this year is very tine as to quality and quantity. " In the Her miston district there was considerable frost damage. Union county reports, "A very excellent crop of apples is in prospect ami should tie as large, or larger, than the 1919 crop. The or chards as a whole this year have re ceived and are receiving much better attention in the way of pruning, spray ing and cultivation, and the apple? show a much better size right now than they iiid at the ram time last year. We had abundant early mois ture." In Wasco comity there has been considerable abandonment and neglect of young bearing apple acre age. Une i true young orcnaro mat produced 10,089 boxes last year will probably produce lets than 5,000 boxes this ear. From Baker county, W. B. Baker. Home, Oregon, says: 'Twill ship seven or eight cars of apples this year. Quality and size of fruit is better than "usual. I al?o have a fine leach crop of between forty and fifty cars. Boys Warned Against Running Boards Ranchers whose places are on the West Side road leading to the Boys' Recreational Camp on the Butler place, declare that they have noticed that many truck drivers and motorists per mit the boys, on the way to and from the camp, to ride on running boards of motor vehicles. The ranchers have urged that parents put an end to the practice. It is pointed out that one of the youthful riders may be jarred from hiB perch and seriously injured..
