to British Columbia, savs :
"We find the people here much more
obliging than on our own side. They
are wulling to accommodate their cus
tomers even though they have to go
out of their way to do it. Apparently
they do it as a matter of course and
make no boastB about it. Our conven
tion here has been one of the best we
havti ever had.
"We left Hood River early Saturday
morning, July 30. We drove to Tacoma
the first-day, adistance of 236 miles.
Here we stayed over night and till
Sunday afternoon, when we drove on
to Seattle and Everett, reaching Ever
ett about 0.30 p. m., in time to hear
Rev. W. P. Kirk, who used to be at
Hood River, preach.
"Monday mornir.g about 10 o'cock
we set out on the remainder of our
journey to Vancouver. Rev. Kirk and
his son, Joseph, coining up with us for
a week's outing. We crossed the
boundary line into Canada about 4 p.
m. and reached Vancouver about 6
o'clock Monday evening. We find
Vancouver is a very progressive city
with paved streets both in city and
country districts. Numerous large
buildings of from six to 14 stories."
FUNERAL OF FIRE
VICTIM THURSDAY
Funeral services for Hans Christian
Olsen, aged 63, rancher of Mosier, who
succumbed at 3 o'clock Thursday morn
ing to burns sustained the day before
when he was trapped by a brush fire
near his home, were held at 4 o'clock
that afternoon at the Anderson chapel,
Rev. J. C. Hanna, pastor of the First
Christian church, officiating. Inter
ment followed at LJIewilde cemetery.
Mr. Olsen with neighbors was fight
ing the fire, when the former was cut
off on a cliffside. A way to safety
along a ledge was open to him, but in
passing a narrow point he slipped from
the cilff, falling Hbout H0 feet into a
mass of flaming brush. His burns
were terrible, the skin having been
seared from almost his entire bodv.
Despite the intense suffering he re
mained conscious until a short time be
fore his death.
Mr. Olsen is survived by the follow
ing children: Henry C. Olsen, of
San Francisio; Mrs. Eugene Worth, of
Los Angeles; Mrs. S. B. Wheeler, of
Silverton ; Mrs. F. E. Conlee and
Emanuel Olsen, of Mosier. The
whereabouts of another sop, Julius, is
unknown. He disappeared from The
Dalles in 1917, and all efforts to trace
him have been vain.

The remains of Mrs. Lucy E. Post,
who died Friday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. B. T. Young, in the
Odell district, were shipped by S. E
Bartmess to Prineville, where funera
services were held Sunday. Mrs. Post
was buried beside her husband. Mrs
Post, aged 70 years, was a native of
Corvallis. Most of her life had been
spent in eastern and central Oregon.
In addition to Mrs. Young the fol
lowing sons and daughters survive
Mrs. C. A. Gilmore, of Wasco; C. M
Post, of Seattle; Mrs. Mollie QUII
water and Joseph Post, of Post, and
Frank M. Post, of Alfalfa.

ington, D. C, who are on an Inspec
tion tour of the Pacific ('oast, were
here last Friday guests of Capt. Fran

from Portland and were shown over
the orchard districts.
Capt. Lewis, who recently returned
from service with the Army of Occu
pation in Germany, has just completed
a course of training at Camp Lewis.
He will leave here, after a visit with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. G
Lewis, for Eugene, where he has been
assigned as professor of military sc
ence at the University of Oregon.
Childs Warns Growers
Growers of all parts of the Ixiwer
Valley have been busy the past week
