DAYTON, WASH., MAN
HAS FINE ORCHARD
According to A. I). Moe. who recent
ly toured eastern Washingtori fruit dis
tricts, E. S. Kyerson. Dayton, Wash.,
fruit grower, has one of the most
highly developed apple tracts on the
Pacific Coast.
"This la saying a good deal, " says
Mr. Moe, "but Mr. Kyerson has the
evidence. His tract is ideally set four
miles from town in rich bottom land.
He has plenty of free water. His air
drainage is so good that he suffered
practically bo damage from the heavy
freeze of 1919. Mr. Kyerson has 75
acres of bearing trees, and they al
ways yield excellently.
"Mr. Kyerson has an apple house
complete for the work of harvesting
and packing out of his fruit. It is two
stories hiijh and has a basement. It
will hold several carloads of apules
He estimates this year's crop at 30.
000 boxes.
ne manuiaciures his own snrav
material. He has a complete plant on
his place. He is fortunate in having
been in the drug business for many
years and is a skilled pharmacist and
chemist and understands the mixing of
spray materials. He gets excellent
results, for out of a crop of about 20,-
000 boxes last vear he had onlv 18
wormy apples.
'Mr. Kyerson operates two Bpray
machines. He keeps one crew con
stantly busy applying the solution to
trees, while the other machine is driv
en to the filling station. Thus he is
able to cover 12 to 15 acres daily. The
two machines are operated with a crew
f four men and thus the time usually
wasted while a Bingle machine is being
Hied is eliminated.
Mr. Kyerson has plenty of bunk
houses on his orchard place. He has
his own water system under high pres-
ure. the water is piped to his own
residence and four tenant houses.
There is but one thing that he
oesn t do which we follow in our
orchards. He never thins his fruit.
He says he has a system of pruning
that causes the trees to thin them
selves.
"He has direct connections with a
large Chicago fruit firm, which take
his entire output. His net returns for
the last several years have been better
than that of other growers who utilize
the regular trade channels.
"His orchard place is equipped with
a large mess kitchen. He hires the
best cook obtainable, and boards all of
his help who desire it. He never lacks
help.
"He has equipped his packing plant
with a grading machine made by Tim
othy iNewell, out ne doesn t Peiieve in
the mechanical sorting of fruit, and
he has provided the sizer with a large
grading table, where he snares no time
or expense in mantaining the pack for
which he has gained such a reputa
tion." BLUE DIAMOND IS
