THE DALLES MAN
INSPIRED BY HOOD
J. C. Johnsen was recently spending
a vacation in the Lost Lake country.
On a walk through the section he hap
pened on a man intent in writinir as he
KHzed at the glory of Mount Hood in
the early morning sunlight. The vis
itor, who proved to be Edwin Huridv.
of The Dalles, was writinir h mam.
He promised to send Mr. Johnsen the
results of his inspiration. The noem.
entitled "Mount Hood," appears be
low :
We've seon the bigb hills in the east
and west.
We've seen them In sunshine and shade.
Arrayed in bright colors as seen at
their best
From hilltop or from the deep glade.
we ve seen them bedecked in a
beautv rare.
We've seen them in various mood,
iiut witn all their grandeur they
don't compare
With the graceful form of Mt. Hood.
We've looked on
ous grade.
In mute admiration we've stood :
The lapse of the years and ages have
made
No change in the form of Mt. Hood
its slopes of peril-
We ve seen the rich hues of
and gold
In light of the sun's afterglow.
Reflecting a splendor that's not been
told,
On its crown of eternal snow
It still stands intact, ten thousand
years old,
With its grace no monuments vie;
It stands there alone, a sentinel bold.
As it lifts its proud dead on high.
We ve seen the skill of omnipotent
hand
Creating all things for our good.
but in Nature s realm there s nothing
more grand
Than the snow canned cone of Mt.
Hood.
THE FERTILIZATION
OF BERRY PLANTS
(By Gordon Brown)
For a number of years the writer has
been experimenting with various fer
tilizers for strawberries. Results have
always favored the use of considerable
nitrogen for whatever formula used.
Larger yields and sizes as a rule result
even on new soil. 1 he writer has
deemed it wise to use a "complete"
fertilizer in recommending a fertilizer
for the valley as a whole. This would
include phosphoric acid and potash in
the fertilizer as well as nitrogen. This
last year the Apple Growers Associa
tion has been buying the "simples ;"
that is, nitrate of soda, super phos
phate and sulphate of potash, and mix
ing them in whatever proportion the
grower desired. In most cases this has
been mixed upon a tonnage basis as
follows :
Nitrate of soda, 80(1 pounds, super
phosphate, 800 pounds, sulphate of pot
ash, 400 pounds.
It is recommended that this be ap
plied at the rate of 2b0 pounds per acre
right after the topping season and
thoroughly hoed in. In early spring
250 pounds more of the same fertilizer
should be applied.
On Willow Hat and in the newer
sections such as Dee, Parkdale and
Middle Valley there is a possibility
that less potash may be used to better
advantage. These soils apparently are
pretty well supplied with ash deposit
from which potash is derived. An ex
cess ot potash may give seedy berries
ot smaller size than where it is used
moderately. The section of berries on
Willow Flat giving largest yield this
year had nitrate of soda at the rate of
220 pounds per acre; super phosphate.
SOU pounds per acre, and sulphate of
potash 72 pounds per acre. This is a
total application of 592 pounds per
acre, one-half of which was applied
during the summer of 1920 and the bal
ance in early spring, 1921. On a ton
nage basis this is made up as follows:
(i pounds, nitrate of soda ; 990
pounds super phosphate : 285 pounds
sulphate of potash.

Consul Pushes Boys' Case
On advices from Wasco county
authorities, local authorities last week
apprehended Clayton Rand, local boy,
who was with a party of youths al
leged not long agt) to have tired on an
Hiitomohlie carrying Alma D. Katz and
CoL John W. Leader and their wives
to Ihe Dalles. Sheriff Chrisman states
that warrants are out for the other
boys, who are: Enes Absher, Wilbur
Bywater, Cloyd Gordon and Bovd
Campbell. The case against the boys,
it is said, is being pushed by the Brit
ish consul at Portland, as Col. Leader
is a British subject.
While the occupants of the car de
lare that the boys, who approached
their automobile from the rear, fired
with a revolver, and offer a punctured
windshield as evidence, the youths
claim that they had no fire arms and
that a rock was thrown by one of their
number. Young Rand visited The
Dalles and gave himself up to officials.
He has been released on his own re
cognizance to await grnd jury action.
All of the other boys are out of the
county at present engaged in eastern
Oregon harvest fields or working at
highway jobs.
New York Artist May Locate
R. Griffith, New York City artist,
who with his wife and two children
stopped for a while lust week while en
route on a motor trip east from Cali
fornia, says he may locate here. Mr.
Griffith declares that the Northwes
tern scenery has bitten deep, and he
doubts if he ever recover. Mr. Grif
fith plans the establishment of a school
for artists here and at The Dalles.
Mr. Griffith has won a wide local
recognition during his short stay. He
has painted a large number of beauti
ful pictures of local landscapes, one of
the most attractive of which was pur
chased by the Franz store.
Cow Owners Warned
The county court has issued a warn
ing to orchardists against staking cows
on public roads. It is said that a num
I ber of minor accidents have resulted
i from the mixing of automobiles and
j staked cows recently. The owners of
animals, trespassing on the highway,
I the court cites, will be responsible for
any damage resulting from collisions.
