BUSINESS WOMEN'S
CLUB ELECTS
At a meeting at the Mt. Hood Hotel
last Thursday night, following a din
ner, the recently organized Profession
al & Business Women's Club voted to
affiliate with the state federation of
such clubs and Mrs. 0. R. Croyle and
Mrs. Susie 1. Lynn were elected dele
gates to attend the state convention to
be held in Portland Saturday, June 11.
Officers of the new organization were
elected as follows: Mrs. Orva Wiley,
president; Mrs. Susie Lynn, firBt vice
president; Mrs. Eunice Woodard, sec
ond vice president; Miss Opal CaJIiaon,
secretary, and Miss I.ydiu Johnson,
treasurer.
The members of the women's organ
ization expressed unanimous approval
of the proposed $350, 000 road bond
issue.
One of the initial activities of the
new women's dub was cooperation
with the city council to secure for a
park a small triangular plot at the
west edge of town, where Cascade ave
nue and Oak street intersect and form
two thoroughfares for Highway traffic
through the city. The women defeated
a move calling for utilization of the
triangle for signboard purposes. They
will beautify it. They have also
planned beautilication of an approach
to the concrete Highway bridge over
Hood river.
JACK ANDERSON TO
CO TO WEST POINT
John H. Anderson, world war vet
eran and former Mood Kiver school
boy, last week received instructions to
report July 1 at West Point, where he
will take a 4-year military course. Mr.
Anderson, who is 23 years old, was
assigned to a military school last year,
while he was a member of a cavalry
regiment stationed at Washington. He
paused a competitive examination with
a hiizh mark early in the year. He
has been home on a furlough with his
foster mother, Mrs. J. H. Dukes, for
the past several weeks.
Mr. Anderson was a member of
Troop A, Oregon Cavalry, on the Mex
ican border. He was overseas with a
field artillery regiment, sustaining
wounds in action. At the time of the
armistice celebration Mr. Anderson
was in a hospital near Paris and was
in the city on leave when the great
news broke. Later he was one of the
Oregon men present at the Paris meet
ing when the American Legion was
organized.
WHITE SALMON
(From I lie KnterprlHe)
The Wm. Fordyce ranch, just south
of llusum, has been purchased by the
Robertson brothers of Minneapolis,
who recently came here to look after
their father's orchard near the For
dyce place. This now gives the Rob
ertsons a splendid tract and room for
expansion.
J. Ross Karr. of Yakima, while in
Portland last week, secured publicity
In the Portland papers for the White
Salmon - Glenwood - Yakima highway.
Mr. Karr is an active protagonist of
an automobile road from Yakima
through the Mt. Adams country to
Portland, declaring it would be of
great value to this city, since at pres
ent the Yakima people naturally travel
to the Puget Sound cities, where good
roads afford easy means of communi
cation. Such a route as he favors,
however, would make Portland equally
easy of access. Scenically, too, the
road would offer many attractions, he
declared.
On Sunday, June 12th, at Stevenson,
will be held a North Bank highway
picnic when all towns along (he north
bank of the Columbia river will join in
the celebration of the opening of the
highway.
The White Salmon bard has been
secured to furnish the muic for the
day and the local ball team will cross
bate in the forenoon with the Carson
tea m. In the afternoon the Stevenson
ball team will play the Lyle team.
There will be a big program and a
dance in the evening. Larire numbers
of people from this section and Under
wood are planning to drive to Steven
son, June 12, to take in this celebra
tion. Auto Park Is Crowded
The Hood Kiver free auto camping
park of three acres, established last
year, is far too small to accommodate
the larire number of motor tourists
seeking a rest of a night or day or
two. On Mvi ral recent nights over 70
cars, with an average of four passen
gers, I topped on the oak-covered plot.
All of these were located for the
niiiht. During the day double that
number of cars from nearby points,
the occupants seeking a place for
lunch, visited the park.
Those w ho have observed the over
crowded condition of the park declare
that another park is needed or addi
tional ground should be purchased to
augment the size of the existing camp
ing place.
