at Columbia University and in Amer

is not yet 30 years old. Many of the
students under her are older. She has
been called the past year to address
assemblies at Vassar, Smith, Welles-

j&Charles Gumm, Chinese restaurant
owner here and chef at the Mt. Hood
Hotel, declares that his old home
country has "shadows" who are bolder
in their operations than American
criminal artists. Charles has just re
ceived a letter from China telling of
the kidnapping of Ho Sing, who for
merly associated with the local restau
rant man and who lett last fall tor a
vacation. Sing had worked without
ivt for 10 vears. He had saved about
$4,000. He is being held for a ransom
of this amount, and Charley Gumm be
lieves that after a series of bargaining
conferences with the pirates he will be
released.
Then, according to Charley, Sing will
lose no time in getting back to Amer
ica, where he can make more money.
Sing on his return to the Orient last
fall was accompanied by an aged uncle,
Yong Fu, former Salem merhant, who
expected to spend his last few years in
his native province.

The Woman's Club, a committee of

campaign, will extend its work, and
efforts will be made to secure the oper

At the club meeting last week two

The club will hold its nominating

Guy Hrubaker
The playmates of 12-year old Guy
liiu k baker were shocked Thursday to
learn of his death at the Cottage hos
pital from acute appendicitis. The
boy, too, was well known in the busi
ness district of the city, where his
cheery voice was heard as he sold Port
land Telegrams each afternoon. The
boy died within an hour after arrival
at the hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday,
interment following at Idlewilde cem
etery. Gay is survived by his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. W. Hrubaker, a sister and
three older brothers. The family came
here recently from Portland, where
they resided for three months, having
originally lived at Glendive, Mont.
Farrell Brings Frost News
Harry Farrell, who has spent the
winter in New York Citv, engaged
with H. F. Davidson in the latter's ex
port office, has just returned to Hood
River with the report that the recent
frosts over eastern and middle western
fruit districts has taken a heavy toll
(jf fruit crops. The winter of the east
ern Biid middle western sections was
comparatively mild, but the late
freezes caught the fruit buds unusually
advanced. The Missouri apple sec
tions, Mr. Farrell says, was heavier
than cl.-i'w here, and the crop will be
almost a total loss.
The decrease in the eastern
tinn of all kinds of fruits. Mr
says, will naturally stimulate an early
demand lor northwestern ikjx apples

19 Myninst, the Middle Fork Irrigating
Co. has decided to sell its stock to a
bonded district. While the date for an
election for formally organizing the dis
trict has rot been set, the sentiment as
expressed in the stock company's ac

formed. The ditch will be operated
this year, however, as a stock concern.
By the organization of a bonded dis

Grass Leases Smith Building
It. Gross has leased for a term of I
five years all of the Smith building
except the two stores occupied by the
Sloeom-Uonnerherg Co. and A. S.
Keir. Mr. Gross states that he does
not anticipate removing to the new
quarters until he is forced to vacate
the structures he now occupies. His
removal, however, will probably be
forced within a vear, the Butler Bank
ing Co. contemplating a new building
on the site he now occupies.

economy
in motor car
operation
The manufacturer of your automobile recommends, In
the Instruction Book for your car, that the crankcase be
drained out and flushed and then refilled with fresh oil at
regular intervals.
This is necessary because engine operation causes a
steady accumulation of road dust, carbon, fine metal par
ticles and other impurities in the crankcase oil. This gritty
oil circulates through your engine, impairs its performance
and ultimately leads to rapid depreciation and repairs.
But cleaning the crankcase is a job generally disliked
and neglected.
To meet this need, Modern Crankcase Cleaning Service
has been established by first-class garages and other deal
ers co-operating with the Standard Oil Company. These
garages and dealers use Calol Flushing Oil, the scien
tific agent that cleans out old oil, dirt, grit and other
impurities, and does not impair the lubricating efficiency
of fresh oil used. The cleaned crankcase is refilled with the
correct grade of Zerolene.
Look for the garage or dealer displaying the sign shown
below it means "Better operation and longer engine life."
