Mayor Scobee, at the instance of the
Woman's Club, has officially designated
April 4 to 11, inclusive, as clean-up
week. Miss May Davidson is chairman
of the committee of club women who
will urge all citizens to remove the
accumulation winter rubbish and place
their homes and lawns on dresslparnde
in anticipation of the heaviest tourist
traffic ever experienced here before.
With the Highway completely paved
from Hood River to Astoria and the
new Columbia Gorge hotel preparing
to receive guests by June 1, it is ex
pected that a stream of motor tourists
will soon begin to .pour through the
city.
In former years, because of a lack of
roadside signboards, it is declared that
most of the thousands of tourists who
have passed here over the Highway,
have missed seeing the orchard dis
tricts. The Business Men's Associa
tion, having secured a county appro
priation of $500, have in readiness for
placing a comprehensive road sign
system.

WHITE SALMON
1 1 nun tbe Enterprise)
The "Husum Princess" the blue rib
bon Berkshire sow, owned by Elwin
Olson, the 12 year old son of William
OUon of Husum, presented its proud
little owner last Sunday with a fine lit
tle of twelve pigs. Elwin has dis
plaved the "Husum Princess" at the
county fair and twice captured blue
ribbons, once for an open gilt, and an
other for sow and litter.
While in Portland last week County
Commissioners Wyers and Crocke
made arrangments with the S. P. S
Ky. Co., to connect wun the railway
water tank at Clins to get more water
onto the counlv tarm. iwo acres on
the county farm have been planted tt
asparagus and this should prove tt
bring good returns, as the gross re
turns from asparagus on the Bingen
flat are $1,000 per acre. Prospects for
good crops of all kinds on the county
farm are good, as that section has
had plenty of moisture during the past
several months.
The highway department is rapidly
finishing its work on the Underwood
sections of the North liank highway,
and has completed its work on the Un
derwood-White Salmon section to where
the new road meetH the old grade.
Work of completing the big till on each
side of the new steel bridge is now
being pushed as fast as posssible.
The county has been widening the
rest ot the roau to Mann s corner as
well as the grade on Bald Ml. and
big grader is to be used to further
cut out some of the sharp turns.
Someone has suggested that the coun-
tv secure.the big steam shovel to cut
down the upper side of the road anil
widen same, nut tne county, it is
learned, has not I sufficient funds ft
that. In spite of the heavy rains and
recent snows, the traveling public gen
erally reports that roads throughout
western Klickitat county are in far
better condition at this time of the
year than at the same time in former
years.
Portland Folk Open Summer Place
Mrs. W. H. Skene, of Portland, ar
rived here last week to start workmen
on remodeling a summer home lust
west of the city and at no great dis
tance from the new Columbia Gorge
hotel. The country place was built by
Mrs. Skene's father in 1904. The fam
ily, howevevr, has not resided in it for
15 years. Mrs. Skene declares that
the opening of a fully paved Columbia
Highway has stimulated a new inter
est in life in Hood River. She de
clares that she anticipates a move on
the part of many Portlanders toward
establishing country cottages in this
neighborhood.
Poultry Men to Store Eggs
A number of poultry raisers state
that the drop in price of eggs to 22
cents deprives them of profits from
their flocks of laying hens. Several
chicken ranchers have decided to'trv
and store their eggs until .the straw
berry harvest. Then, it. is said, the
keen .local demand for eggs always
sends the price soaring. Large quant-
ties of eggs are used during the pick
ng season when hundreds of transient
labors are here.
Lotus Grille Serves Lunches
IL M. Hicks state that the Satur
day evening dancing at the Lotus con
tinues to row. A large number of
merrymakers were at the popular cab
aret Saturday night. Mr. Hicka has
just inaugurated plans for serving
daily merchant's lunches at the grille.
