INFORMATION ON
INCOME TAX REPORTS
Births, deaths, and marriages during
the year 1920 affect materially income
tax returns for that year.
Millions of babies were added to
family circles, each of whom brings
an exemption of $2(Mi in the parents'
income tax return.
Widows and widowers who lost their
husbands or wives during the year are
especially affected. They are single
for the purposes of the income tax law
and are granted only an exemption of
$1,000. unless the head of a family.
Persons who were divorced or sep
arated by rr.utual agreement during
the year also must consider themselves
as single persons.
The status of the tixpayer on De
cember 81, 1920, determines the amount
of the exemptions. If on that day the
taxpayer was married and living with
wife or husband, claim may be made
for the $2,000 exemption. If single,
or married and not living with wife or
husband on December 81, the exemp
tion is only $1,000.
Persons who reached majoriity dur
ing the year and whose earnings for
that period amounted to $1,000 or
more, or $2,000 or more, according to
their marital status, must file a return
and pay a tax on their net income in
excess of those amounts.
To avoid penalty, the return must be
in the hands of the Collector of Inter
nal Revenue for the district in which
the taxpayer lives, or has his principal
place of business, on or before mid
night of March 15, 1921.
Another Side to Rail Wages
Editor Glacier : 1 am surprised that
the Apple Growers Association should
take such a decided stand against the
railroad workers. When you mention
wages being too high for railroad
workers you are talking about the
little band of faithful men right here
in Hood Kiver, some of whom in busy
season stay at work until 10 or 11
o'clock at night so that the fruit may
be kept moving. I don't think anyone
will say they are over paid. In fact
it is well known that they are under
paid, even now, as a whole.
In some cases the railroads are kept
poor paying excessive salaries to ofH
eials, as was proven by the govern
ment during its control. This might
apply to some of the fruit associations
mentioned by Mr. McCullagh.
The fundamental trouble is that the
apples grown here are just about 2,000
miles too far from the market. Eh
pecially when other points have a good
crop.
In regard to that baked potato I ex
pect any first class hotel would charge
about the same for that spud. It's
service you pay for, not spuds. In
fact it is a well known fact among
railroad men that there are very few
dining car runs that pay expenses.
They simply run them for the accom
modation of the patrons of the road.

Mr. Henderson Tells of Son
John Leland Henderson, pioneer at
torney of Hood Kiver who is now lo
cated at Tillamook, wns here last week
on business. Mr. Henderson is very
proud of the record of a son, Eliot
Henderson, who servtd with the tin r
chant marine during the war. The
young man, following his discharge
from the merchant marine, enlisted
with the navy. He is now stationed at
Mare Island.
"Eliot was a lucky boy and the
United States government has been
good to him. He had influenza, mumps,
scarlet fever, was ruptured and then
was operated on for appendicitis, all in
succession," sad his father. "Then
when he got straightened out he hail
tonsilitis and had his tonsils removed.
He received excellent care at govern
ment hospitals. Why it would have
cost him thousands of dollars if he had
suffered these misfortunes as a private
individual. As it was, the government
paid the bills."
Commercial Committees Named
President J. H. Fredricy, of the Hood
River Commercial Club, has appointi d
committee heads for the ensuing yeai
as follows: House, S. J. Moore ;
Roads. E. W. Birge; Finance, C. Vt .
McCullagh; Membership, J. D. Gut
tery; Entertainment, Al. W. Peters;
Civic and Automobiles, F. H. Black
man. The chairmen will themselves
appoint other members of their re
spective committees.
Restaurant Prices Back to Normal
The back to normal spirit is being
revealed in local restaurant pnceB.
Before the war prices are in vogue
again, and in cases where portions
were lessened during the days of high
cost of foodstuffs, the old time size is
again served.
Smallpox Appears Here
County Health Officer Edgington last
week isolated a man found stricken
with smallpox in a local lodging house
Dr. Edgington is now waging a cam
paign for vaccination. It was the lirtt
case of smallpox to up near hire this
year.
