RECONSTRUCTION!
Now, while the world is doing its "house clean
ing," is a good time to begin a "reconstruction
period" at home.
Whichever room you start with you will find
need for B-H Satin Egg Shell Finish. Although
intended for walls and ceilings it makes a beauti
ful egg-shell enamel on woodwork too. The
Kitchen Library Bedroom Hallway or Bath
can be made brighter, more attractive and easier
to keep clean by a coat of B-H Satin Egg Shell
finish any one of twelve shades.
Be sure to think of Bass-Hueter when consider
ing a painting job whether a room or an entire
house inside or out.

OF THE PHILIPPINES
Mrs. H. D. Kneedler, wife of a Man
ila, P. I., physician, who iH here visit
ing her Bister. Mrs. J. K. Edgar, and
family, is of the opinion that America
will never relinquish a protectorate, at
least, of the Philippine Islands. Much
talk is heard and newspaper stories
read, Mrs. Kneedler says, of Philip
pine independence. She believes, how
ever, that the conservative citizenry of
the Islands, comprising the real sub
stantial population, while no open
movement is being made to oppose
independence propaganda, is really
sincerely desirous that America retain
a protectorate. The thinking people of
the Philippines, both American and
Filit)ino8. she declares, realize that
America must remain in control of the
situation to prevent aggression of Jap
an. She avows that the feeling it
general that Japan would not wait two
weeks for aggressive tactics, should
America relinquish the Islands.
"The present administration, or an
other for that matter," Mrs. Kneedler
says, "will never give the Philippines
unlimited independence. In the first
t) ace. America realizes that such a
course cannot be safely pursued. Even
if America were willing France and
England would not permit an abandon
ment of the Islands."
At present, however, she states, the
only authoritative American in the
Philippines is the governor general.
All lesser ofiices are held by natives
The result, she says, is anything but
satisfactory from the standpoint of a
residence there. Sanitation is dropping
back to the careless ways of the old
Stmnish administration. Good roads
that the Americans built and improved
are going to pieces. The Kneedler
family has decided to return to the
States to live, on account of sanitation
and to educate their children. Since
her arrival here Mrs. Kneedler has re
ceived a cablegram from her husband
announcing sale of residence property
and that he will sail for home in January.
While the older American population
of the Islands is thinning out Mrs.
Kneedler says the arrival of newcom
ers has brought the white population
to a record point. American business
is making strong bids for Island busi
ness, and most of the new arrivals at
Manila and other points are represent
atives of American business houses.
Mrs. Kneedler says the recent con
gressional committee, which went on a
junket to the Philippine Islands learn
ed only what officialdom there desired
that they learn. The congressmen,
acccompanied by their wives and fam-
tes, had an enjoyable vacation, and
apparently everything was done for
heir entertainment, but they were
shown only the things that would im-
ress them as favorable to the officials.
Americans, she says, who were known
o be the least unsympathetic were not
tllowed places on committees of enter
tainment and were prevented from
getting at the ear of the congressional
unketers.
On the arrival of Dr. Kneedler, Mrs.
Kneedler, who is accompanied by her
hildren. will loin him. I hey expect
to make their home in San Diego, Cal.

"They said I couldn't live more than
six months longer, but I'm still here
and feeling fine," aid Mrs. Mary Da
ley, of 630 Oak St., San Francisco,
Cal,
"I have actually gained seventeen
pounds since 1 began taking Tanlac,"
she continued, "and to look at me one
wouldn't think that for several months
I was unable to do my housework. I
suffered from gastritis all the time,
would bloat terribly and always felt
miserable. I had no appetite and felt
nauseated all the time. I was so ner
vous the least little noise would startle
me andjt was almost impossible to get
a good night's sleep. J had night
sweats and was so run down and weak
that the slightest exertion would al
most exhaust me completely. I lost
weight dreadfully and was told that I
couldn't live six months at the rute I
was going down hill.
"Nothing helped me until 1 began
taking Tanlac and 1 honestly believe it
is the finest medicine in the world, for
it has made me just like a new person.
My appetite is splendid and I never
have the slightest indigestion any
more and I never enjoyed such fine and
refreshing sleep in my life as I do
now. My house has eight rooms and 1
do all the work with ease. Tanlac
has been a god-send to me and I would
be Belfish not to tell others about it."

Autumn Colors Appear
While no killing frosts have pre
vailed on the lower levels, foliage of
vine maples, dog wood and Oregon
grape on the Columbia bluffs is rapidly
taking on the tints of fall. The bare
ranges on the Washington side, as a
result of the recent rains, have grown
as green as springtime. I he inter
mingling of the gray of rocky elms,
the green of the open spaces and the
various tints of autumn leaves now re
sult ill many appealing views from
here.
