PERNICIOUS ACTIVITIES A movement was begun here last Saturday to combat the five per cent interest bill and to wardjoff a cam paign of Non-Partisan adherents. We have heard of Oie Non-Partisan Leacue for a long time. S nee last spring the five per cent interest bill has been under way. Most of us, as we studied the move of the North Dakota Non Partisans, came to the conclusion that the application of socialism to state government was entirely too radical for us. We felt that Non-Partisans would never gain a foothold in Oregon that our citizens were too intelligent to fall for such a scheme. The same reasoning applied to the five per cent interest bill. Those of us who analyzed it and saw how it would drive capital from our state, concluded that all other citizens would do likewise, and that the danger of such a bill being foisted on us was too remote to raise any fears. Yet it seems that a fair percentage of the Oregon electorate, if it were to go to the polls tomorrow, is ready to vote for the five per cent bill. It is a fact that many Oregon farmers have already signed up as Non-Partisans. In most instances the farmers who have heeded the call of the Non-Parti- san organizer are discontented over existing conditions. Put many others who have no reason for discontent are aligning themselves with the move ment, attracted by its panaceas. It is inconceivable how anyone can support the five per cent bill, which will rob Oregon of all funds for devel opment. The Non-Partisan plan does advance proposals of merit, but they carry with them' a scheme of state so cialism that has left North Dakota in a sad state of affairs. The farmers there are in control with shrewd or ganizers at the helm of their political affairs. They arc taxing thdttMlVM to death to bring about a practical working of their socialistic theories. New Snow Covers Hood Climbing from the south aide of Mt. Hood Sunday and descending to Cloud "ap Inn, Clem Plakney, Government Camp guide, reports tjiat two feet of fresh snow fell on the mountain Friday and Saturday. The life line used in making ascents on the north side was entirely covered, and Mr.JPIakney had to uescenu by clinging to rock pin naeles. He declared the view from the summit, with six snow peaks in sight, was superb. It is expected that the new snow will melt sufficiently to uncover the life-line for parties that expect to as cend Hood on Labor Day. On a conservative estimate we believe that more than f0) motor parties have passed through Howl River the past month without knowing that a world famed orchard district was within a few minutes' ride up to the Columbia gorgeside. Hy our failure to properly mark our roads and to place compre hensive signs along the Columbia River Highway, directing travelers to these available routes through the orchards, we are unfair to ourselves as well as the motorists who pass this way. MacMillan Makes Statement N. A. MacMillan, appointed last week as member of I general commit tee to combat the five per cent interest bill, to be voted on in November, as well as the Non-Partisan League, has asked to be relieved of work in so far as the League is concerned. Mr. MacMillan declares that it was explained Ito him that his committee was to act with respect to the interest bill only. Press reports to the effect that he was engaged in fighting the Non-Partisan league, he says, have brought a protest from rural custom ers, who threatened a withdrawal of their trade. Roads Not Bad, Says Humble Dr. H. L. Humble, who with Mrs. Dumble and Mr. and Mrs. George Mel lon returned lant week from a motor trip to Puget Sound districts of Wash ington and British Columbia points, declares that the roads traveled the 1.5(H) mile distance were fairly good when considered proportionately to the total distance traveled, "We found bad roads," says Dr. Dumble, "but all in all I considered them about as good roads as one would lind on any jaunt of equal distance." Express Increase Announced American Express Manager .Johnson Tuesday announced that the increased rate, averaging about 124 tier cent went into effect yesterday on intertsate shipments. The rate will be effective on intrastate shipments September 10, As no increase on the minimum of 88 cents has been announced, the increase will not affect single gift boxes of ap j.les from here to Portland.
