SOUTH AS1LRICAN
SALES NEGLIGIBLE
The report from New York city that
appk s have been selling in South
Ame ica less at retail than the domes
tic wholesale price, local shippers de
clare, should not be considered with
alar r i by apple growers. South Amer
ican markets, as well as those of the
Oriei.t. are declared peculiar. The
high freight rate, approximately $1
per box. has leulted in negligible
shiprients to South America for the
past few yean.
No api'les, shippers say. have been
hip) ed directly to South America the
past season. In a number of inrtan-es
mercantile establishments dealing with
the ljitin-American countries, placing
their i rders by previous canvaas. have
purchased small quantities of apples
for delivery to the South Ameiican
countries.
Acer rdirg to a New York report an ;
expo-ter. en route to South America to !
establish storage plants, stated that '
apples were selling very cheaply in the
touth. Shippers say that some opera
tor, unable to dispose of purchases on
the domestic market, may have at-,:
tempted to unload his fruit in Latin:
America. With no storage plants
available there, shippers say, such ac
tion would naturally lead to necessity
fur immediate sales, glut of market
and a sacrifice in prices.
Apple shippers, it is said, do not
ship directly to South America because
of the long time credit system of those
countries.

Slides Delay Road Work
John Elder, who walked here from
Mosier last week by way of the new
link of the Highway now nearing cm
pletion, report a that tne rainstorms of
last week caused heavy slides near the
Hood River-Wasco county line. Some
of the enormous slides, of rock and de
bris, Mr. Elder reports, were as large
as cty business blocks.
R. A. Josling says the slides will
delay the opening of the new highway
to traffic until about April 10.

Why folds are Dangeroat
It is the serious diseases that colds
lead to that makes them dange OuS.
They prepare the system for the recep
tion and development of the germs of
influenza, pneumonia tuSereuiosis,
diphtheria, scarlet fever, whoopinn
cuagh and measles. You are much
more likely to contract these diseases
when you have a cold. For the reason
you should get rid of every cold as
quickly as possible. Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy will help you. It is
widely known as a cure for bad colds.
