Taking their cue from the whale or

and gliding silently over the dark wa

One of the uieu bumps the anchor
two or three ttiues on the bow of the

lights up with a bright phosphorescent
gleam. It Is the herring, and the ring
net (now more generally used In the

lowered. It is held up by corks and
has a small light ut one end. This
the partner boat picks up ; they circle
around the herring until the two boats
come together, w hen most of the men
climb into one boat, where they draw
the net, with the herring, on board.

In an opinion given by Attorney
General Brown to the district attorney
for Harney county, the shooting season
for ducks, geese and other migratory
waterfowl has been definitely settled.
Confusion has existed in the minds of
many shooters on account of a differ
ence in the federal and state season.
The state cannot legislate w ithin the
closed season of the federal regulations
but it can legislate within the open
season. The federal open season is
three and one-half months, but the
state, if it cares to, may close any por
tion or all of this federal open Beason.
The shooting season, therefore, which
must be observed bv hunters through
out Oregon, is as follows:
For Multnomah, Clatsop, Columbia
and Tillamook comities, the open sea
on begins October 1 and closes Decem
berr ill. In all other counties of Game
District No. 1, which comprises all that
portion of Oregon lying west of the
summit of the Cascade mountains, the
season opens October 16 and closes Jan
uary 15. In all counties of Game Dis
trict No. 2, which comprises all that
portion of Oregon lying east of the
summit of the Cascade mountains, the
open season begins October 1 and ends
on December 31.
The original draft of the Game Code
included a uniformity of seasons, but
the position was taken that the federal
regulations were unconstitutional, and,
therefore, would be inoperative. Since
the legislature has adjourned, two fed
eral courts have upheld the federal
regulations. It was the clear intent of
the legislature to give equal huntng
seasons. This would have been accom
plished had not the federal law inter
vened. The state law is inoperative
and will be enforced insofar as it does
not conflict with the federal law. The
dates given above are those within
which hunters may shoot and be w ith
in both the federal and state laws.

Hermann I'regge ended terror for
Japanese fruit growers of the Oak
Grove district when he killed a 300
pound male bear. Bruin for several
weeks had been making life miserable
for the Nipponese ranchers. Grubbing
fur bugs, he had destroyed many straw
berry plants and prune and apple trees
looked as though a cyclone had struck
them. It was the habit of the bear to
make visits to the orchards in the
nighttime, pull off branches from the
trees and then eat the fruit leisurely
from broken boughs.
The Japanese had Bet traps all over
the region, but the bear, furnishing
many roasts for local epicures, avoided
the snares.

them. We have asked dozens of them
what they like best of all that is given
them tobacco, magazines, amuse

the comfort kits and toilet articles.
They come In from the front without
even a toothbrush, and when I seud
the bags around by the other patients,
they come back and say : 'Say, you
oughter see how pleased those guys
were they said It was just like Christ
inns. They were all sitting up In bed
looking at the things in their bags.'
"The other tiny one man who had
lost his light hand, culled me over to
him and said: 'Here, I'll donate my
sewlng-klt. My wife has got to do
mine after this. I'm out of It. Yoi
can give this to some other fellow who
needs it.' He had heard the others
asking for sewing-kits all down the
ward. They are in great demand und
very hard to get."

Horsemen Knew Their Business.
The value of having practical horse
men In charge of remount camps is
shown in provisions made for shelter.
When It came to building the great
depots required at each of the camps
they ordered open sheds Instead of
barns or for the severe northern cli
mate, sheds closed on one side. To
the city-bred humanitarian who saw
thousands of Uncle Sam's horses and
mules standing out In the cold, this
seemed cruel, and complaint was en
tered. But by practical test it was
shown that the horsemen were right.
Those animals whlcb were housed up
did not thrive as well as the ones
which were kept in t tie open. When
talking with the head of the remount
division the thing he was most proud
of was the fact that our horses were
kept In better condition with fewer
losses, thnn the horses of England or
France, and Hint we did this with a
much smaller nuin force, largely be'
cause we give them open-air treatment.
