Yet electrical power will" perhaps lie used m fcrrudii and sizing !.' per cent of the carloads of apples shipped from jour valley this year. 1'ractically all growers who use power sizing ma rlines, which effect a saving of labor more so than any other orchard device, drive them with electric motors. More than io such power graders have been , purchas.xi here this" year, and we will be called on to make connections and be ready to t.fTer our service to that many indiviual or community packing : Concerns. I'ower graders also, I am tol l by experienced fruit men. result in a desired standardization of pack." Mr. Strange says that he knows of no agricultural district of the state where electrical power is so generally used by rural residents as in Hood Kiv er. "We tell far more energy to Mood Kiver orchardists than to rural resi dents of any other of our oMices in Ore gon and Washington," he says. "Our lines penetrate every district, except lee. where the Oregon Lumber Co., operating its mill w ith electrical power, furni: hes light. We have 75 miles of distributing line in the Hood Kiver val ley, where the area in cultivation does not exceed 15,000 acres. Mrst all orch ardists' homes are lighted by electric ity. Washing and ironing is accom plished in many instances w ith electri cal energy. Our development here has been rather extensive. 1 find that our records show that for every $1 of gross increased revenue we have expended $5 in property investments." Mr. Strange, w ho left here for a tour of she White Salmon country, stated tint his company had found orchard ists, whose profits from fruit sales have letn unusually good the p;.8t two years, interested in an issue of pre ferred stock offered by his concern. "We are trying to stimulate this in terest, " says the elcetric man, "realiz ing that it will result in a better co operation for future development in the orchard districts." Mr. Stiunye warned apple grocers who w ill complete new packing plants this year and who will require service for elevators and motors to make known their wants soon as possible. "We find it very ditiicult to obtain materials in our line" he said, "and in order to prevent a shortage or a con gestn n at harvest time, we should know the requirements of the district at once."
