America after a tour of English and! SdlHIIlOlU

districts. He spent last week at Mil
waukee attending the annual conven
tion of the International Appla Ship
pers Association. Mr. Davidson says
that England has a big crop of apples,
and that the berry and plum crop was
heavy. While the country's apples are
far below the quality of American
fruit, the exporter says that the ton
nage is sufficient to supply the demand
until October.
"England also has a big pear crop,"
says Mr. Davidson. "And Sweden
will have a good crop of apples. I
was surprised at the orchards there.
Some of the Scandinavian dealers are
a little backward this year as a result
of losses from deterioration in fruit
shipped them toward the close of the
season last year.
The English business outlook is not
as good as it has been. There is a
universal unrest, and strikes are the
rule of the day. The maximum price
set by England on fruit last year still
remains as it was."
Mr. Davidson writes that Germany
will be in the market for American
apples by the first of the year.
SCHOOL NOTES
School will open Monday, Sept. 1.
H. C. McCormick, the Manual Train
ing teacher is remodeling the library
and putting the shop in order for work
beginning Sept. 1. Three very neces
sary pieces of equipment will be added
to this department-a forge, a lathe
and a universal saw table. A strong
course in Farm Mechanics will be
given in this department supplement
ing the work in Agriculture.
Mr. Bailey will be in his office daily
beginning Monday, Sept 18, from 8.30
to 12,00 a. m. All high school stu
dents, especially new students, should
plan to see Mr. Bailey relative to their
work this fall. This will save much
time and delay at the opening of the
semester.
Plans are being worked out for the
new shed just south of the tennis court
to be used for County Fair purposes
and, later, for auto shed for students
driving cars to school. The shed will
he 16 x 100 feet. The county fair
board will contribute $200 towards trie
expense, the school board paying the
balance and the building to he erected
by the manual training department of
the nigh school.
The lantern room in the auditorium
will be completed this week and the
motion picture machine installed be
fore the opening of school. One of the
best motion picture machines on the
market will be installed. The pictures
will be chiefly educational and cor
related with the regular school work
as much as possible. The machine
will be installed, fully equipped by the
Associated Student Body of the high
school and will be used for the benefit
of the entire school system and com
munity. So far there has been no janitor
found to succeed Mr. Hall at the jun
ior high school building. Though well
vanced in years Mr. Hall was unusually
painstaking in his work about the
school.
All students planning to attend to U.
of 0. or O. A. C. or any other school
are requested to see Mr. Bailev. Office
hours 8.30 to 12.00.
Driving Without Lights Dangerous
County Commissioner F. H. Black
man has issued a warning to motorists
driving without lights over the county
highways. Mr. Blackman says the
practice is so generally observed that
it has become dangerqus to travel over
the valley roads after dark.
"1 was out one night last week,"
says Mr. Blackman, "and within a
short distance met six automobiles and
motorcycles traveling without lights.
It raises a hazard that we cannot tol
erate." Phone Hearing Approaches
The 1'ubiic Service Commission has
announced that a hearing in the mat
ter of the application of the Oregon
Washington Telephone Co. to increase
ts rates has been set for 1 o'clock
August 25, at the county courthouse.
'1 he company, declaring that a re
ceivership will be necessary if rates i
are not increased, has asked for a gen
eral increase in revenue.
