Kepresentatives of shipping concerns do not anticipate any higher wane for picking than was paid last year. The cost then for picking apples was five cents per box and packing ranged from .5 to 7 cents. The Apple Growers As sociation w ill hold its annual packing solum! probably during the second week of September, when it is expected that mat y local growers will qualify as li censed packers. Local shippers and growers are pro testing the delay on paving the Colum bia Highway. It is likely that the orchardists of the district will petition that the Highway highway be left open to tratlio during apple harvest tune. 1 hey declare that a largo percentage of the best harvest hands come here in motor cars from Portland and Willam ette valley points, bringing with them their camping equipment and turning their harvest work into a vacation. "While we are back in Missouri," savs Mr. Leonard, "we are going to sell our old home in Grant City, and on our return here we expect to buy a home in Hood Kiver valley. Our resi dence here the past few years has caused us to fall in love with the moun tains and the Cascade scenery." Mr. Leonard served throughout the Civil War w ith the 4th Missouri regi ment.
