Expands The lltMtd River Cigar Co., begun several vears ago on a modest scale by K. M. White, now employs nine cigar makers. The factory turns out 2,it finished ciagrs daily, and the4 demand for the Oregon-made goods is reaching the point necessitating additional em ployes. Mr. White is seeking more igar makers. "If we continue to grow in the next year as fast as we did last," says Mr. White, who now has two sons, K. M. and I., il. White, both skilled cigar manufacturers here associated with him, "within 12 months we will oper ate the largest, cigar factory in Ore iron. It is our aim to put Hood River cigars on a par with Hood River ap ples. It is a fact that we already find the reputation of the local apples an aid to us 111 selling cigars." I Sand Storm Blows Across Bar The big sandbar of several hundred acres just north of the city for several days last week was a miniature .Sa hara. With a strong wind raging up the Columbia, clouds of sands so dense as to almost shut off 11 view of the Washington bank have been driven up the stream. While the gales continue it is a discomforting walk across the bar, the wind-driven particles of sand stinging like needles. Cows Taken to I ppcr Valley The remnant of the herd of purebred Jersey cows bought here recently from independence by K. V. Wright for gale to orchardists, will be taken to the I'pper Valle, where it is expected that growers will buy all of them. The cows were brought from I. M. Simp son, who has just retired from stock raising because of his advanced age. They are all descendants from sires of the famed Ed Carey herd at Carlton. 0.-W. These are being hatched at the Walla Walla hatchery and are due here with in a few days,. Mr. Darwin in his let ter to t hairman liaker, of Goldendale, says: "It is very pleasing to be able to assign your county this large num ber of these choicest of the varieties of trout fry. Our take this year is practically identical with the take of last year, and last year we took the greatest number of these vaiietles in the history of our hatchery operations. "The result of our trout spawn tak ing operations is most gratifying in view of the fact that several of the eastern Washington counties, which have in previous years been more or less successful in their egg operations have had total failures this year lie cause of adverse weather conditions."
