Stone Loses Home For the third time in the past six years W. 11. Stone lost his home by tire last week. Mr. Stone, manager of the place, occupied the combined pack ing house and residence of the orchard property of J. K. Shelton, of Topeka, Kas. It is riot known how the fire started. Mr. Stone lost all of his household goods and clott ing. He even lost bis shoes, having just re moved them to don a pair of rubber boots for irrigation. His little son had visited a neighbor's wearing his Sunday trousers, in the pocket of which was a gift watch. At the sug gestion of the neighbor woman he re turned home to don week day clothing. In an hour his good trousers and watch were in ashes. Mr. Shelton lost !.Hit) apple boxes and farming implements. UKaxurell (Hood looks, plenty of comfort and convenience and ample room for five adults make the Maxwell Touring model the ideal car for family use. The popularity of this pleasure car alone, during the past five seasons, would have enabled the Maxwell Motor Company to attain a volume production such as few motor car companies achieve with an entire line. Five years of intensive manufacture have developed the Maxwell chassis remarkably, and the efforts of the past year to enhance (he car's appearance have borne good fruit. SOCIETIES. Mi. It is likely that such an amendment will le offered at the rext city election. While Chas. T. Early has uttered the city and county free use of property for an automobile park fur a term of years, the city council express opposition to the ex petiditure of any lare sum of money ' on properties not owned ly the city. The finance committee of the council has been'apir.ted to confer with the Commercial club over automobile park improvement. The council also l.mks favorably on a proposition for raising an automobile iark fund at the ap- . proarhit g Fourth of July celebration, and the Commercial club will be asked . to cooperate in the movement. i At the Monday night meeting of the ' , council an amendment to an ordinance ! regulating electric signs, was adopted. . The Columbia ttreet iLveliers recently complained to the council, i Mr. Fiiz has announced that he will i have employes of the packing plant ob i serve the direction of the w ind, and no fertilizer will be cooked when the breezes blow from the northeast. At other times the plant gives no etfene and a northeast wind prevails only at infrequent intervals. CHEVROLET MAN ; VOICES OPTIMISM Koy G. Stuait, on a tour of the Northwestern agencies of the Chevro let Motor Car Co., who was here the first of the week, is decidedly optim i istic over future business. Mr. Stuart, ! who in company with E. E. Brett and ! Mark (ameri n, of the Hood Kiver Gar i age, called on business men, says that la condition of prosperity, similar to 'that found in Hood Kiver, prevails; i fairly generally. "Indeed," says Mr. Stuart, "our ! season opened unexpectedly early for us this year. It was just about 'M days 1 ahead of what we had anticipated, and j as a result our Portland distributing i quarters are now cleaned of every-1 ! thing but sedans and trucks. We find that our trucks are moving rapidly." J Mr. Stuart says that his company, with its six manufactui ir.g plants, will make 20(1,000 cars this yeHr. The Oak laud plant, to which a million dollar addition is being rushed, will turn out 2(1, M to cars. "The outstanding feature of the Chevrolet, in my mind," says Mr. Stuart, "is that our car is manufac tured complete at Oakland, on the Pa-citk- coast.
