With more than 50 men signed up
for,a golf and country club, a commit
tee has sought in vain for suitable
property for links. Because of the
high price of land, already set to bear
ing apple trees, near the city. Mr.
Stone believes the organization should
ask the cooperation of the orchardists
of Mosier and the citizens of The
Dalles in establishing a joint club on
the new Highway between here and
Mosier.

Benton Buys New 1'lace
C. K. Benton, already owner of two
tracts nf beating orchard on the East
Side, of 20 acres each, has just pur
chased from Judge Fred W. Wilson, of
The Dalles, and Judge A. E. Lake, of
Wamic, their 50 acre holdings on the
West Side. The newly acquired tract
contains 42 acres in full bearing orch
ard. Mr. Benton is now one of the
heaviest individual ownerB of brearing
orchards in the valley.
Berries Sell High
Strawberries in commercial quanti
ties arrived here last week from the
Hood, Wash., ranch of Wilbur Galli
gan. Mr. Galligan delivered seven
crates of 24 pints each, to Perigo &
Son Wednesday of last week, the fruit
retailing at 30 cents per pint, a record
price for the city. The high mark was
formerly 25 cents per box.
Despite the high price the berries
were sold with dispatch to local house
wives. An inspection will convince you that
the service of the Palace Hotel, Port
land, Oregon, Washington and Twelfth
streets, is second to none. Convenient
to chopping and theatre districts, clean

Rose Hopper Control Suggested
Rose gardeners, according to Leroy
Childs, should spray immediately for
control of the rose leaf hopper, one
of the most worrysome pests for Ore
gon rose fanciers. Mr. Childs says the
pest prevail in all parts of the state.
The hopper should be sprayed with a
solution of Black Leaf 40 at the rate
of 1 to 1200 and soap, four pounds to
100 gallons of water. As the insect
will tie found on the under side of the
foliage, the spray must be directed up
