The campaign of County Fruit In
spector Stanton to spray city fruit and
ornamental trees effectively this year
has come to naught. After sprayirg
about three dozen trees, J. N. Griffith,
selected by Mr. Stanton to treat city
foliage for cure and prevention of dis
eases that menace neighboring orch
ards, called halt, declaring that
property owners declined to pay him
enough for his services.
"They told me they thought it would
be abcut right to pay me 10 cents a
tree for spraying for them," says Mr.
Griffith. "1 was paying a dollar an
hour for my team and power sprayer
and buying the Epray materials. Their
offers wouldn't pay me for the spray,
much less the work and the rig hire."
The law provides that the county
fruit inspector has the right of spray
ing trees of owners, who fail to com
ply with regulations, and assessing the
costs to the property. Mr. Stanton
says he may find it necessary to invoke
the law in freeing the city of danger
ous orchard pests.

WALGREN-MASON
DEAL HERE OPTION
Through the approaches made by the
reported early buyer to other sales
concern in an effort to unload at u
profit, it has been learned that John
Walgren's deal for the 1919 apple crop
of A. 1. Mason is so far a mere option,
setting a price of an average of $1.75
per box on an estimated yield of 10,000
boxes from Mr. Mason's 30 arce orch
ard. The option will expire M iy 1.
The deal. It is said, results from a
bet recently made by Mr. Walgren
with local shipters that he could tie up
a large crop of applts for a dollar.
The wager is siid to be for $10, but
the option with Mr. Maon is bound by
the transfer from Mr. Walgren of only
$1. It is verbally understood between
Mr. JMason and Mr. Walgren, it is
stated, that the latter must tender a
check for $500 on May 1. to turn the
oi tinn a bona tide contract of purchase.
Mr. Walgren stands to win which
ever way his option ends. He will
have a net profit of $9 on his wager,
even if be allows the option to expire.
Snippers, believe that ptomirient buy
ers will not permit the option to end
and that Mr. Walgren may unload at a
piolit.

Narrow Tires I'nder Fire
Orchardists are proposing that laws
be adopted in this state that will limit
the loads on wagons using narrow
tires.
N. W. Bone says he considers the
heavily laden, narrow tired vehicles
one of the most destructive agencies
for highways. Wagons with tires no
wider than an inch and a half, accord
ing to Mr. Bone, should be limited to a
ton load. He says he has seen vehicles
with narrow tires loaded bo heavilv
that their owners, if the wagons were
in a city, would be arrested immedi
