TENTATIVE BUDGET ADOPTED MONDAY Members of the advisory budget hoard met Monday with the county court to set a tentative budget of ex penses for next year. The budget as tentatively adupted provides for a small decrease in next year's taxation, the general budget total having been cut approximately ifli.ooo. Included in the proposed expenditure for next year is a sum of of ,500 for the opening- of a highway connecting (oanty roads with Lost Lake. Mem bers of the Hood River County (lame Protective Association are backing this movement. The budget board de clined to sanction the proposal of ex pending money for establishing a free camp ground for touring motorists. Thoi-e initiating a movement to have a monument erected on the Highway to Hood River county soldiers who hHve fallen in the great war were too late in reaching the budget board to have a fund included in t he coming ear's taxes tor the monument. While the general count v taxes w ill be slightly less next year, an increai in the tax of School lbstrict No. :i, m eluding cit y and surrounding rural com- munitie", w ill make tax on property so located slightly more than last year. While here Mr. liunn announced the appointment of .1. T, Nickelsden in charire of maintenance of the Highway 111 this county. JUDGE BLOWERS SUGGESTS CONCRETE The condition of several hundred feet of the Highway on Tuthton hill and neitr Viento has become so seiious that Judge Blowers has written to State Highway Engineer Nunn sug gesting that the .-hurt stretches be sur faced with concrete. Because of poor drainage the stretches of road have reached the quagmire state and are al most, impassable for automobiles. Judge Blowers expresses the opinion that the cost of permanently improv ing the road with concrete surface will be no greater than for temporary treatment with gravel. In his letter to Lngineer Nunn he expresses the hope that, the State Highway Commis sion will complete the Hood River 1 Mosier stretch of the H ighway next year. O.-W. TEL. CO.
