The directors of the big frontier show offered to con tribute the entire net proceeds to the Red Cross and the offer was aeeeptei. by the organization's representatives yesterday. The lunth of Pendleton's famous epii dramas of the west will be held or September R, -U and 21, and despih the fact that some of the famous cow hoys and bilckaroos have answered tin (all of their country i ml are now bull dogging the hun somewhere in France, there will he competition aplenty foi the prizes and trophies. The usual program will ho presented, hut. then will be added touches of the military and patriotic in keeping K ith the spirit of wartime. No person has ever roieived a salary or dividend from the Round-up, . hut heretofore the profits of the show havi been devoted to civic improvements in I'endletou. In these times, however, the directors decided that such im provements should give way to war en terprises, and made their offer accord ingly. SALARY CASE HEARD ON TECHNICAL POINTS The main point at issue, the validity of a bill initiated in R'l 1 by the Hood River County Pomona lirargo in con trol of county salaries, did not arise at a hearing by Circuit Judge Wilson, of the case of Jasper Wickham, cunty assessor, who recently instituted man damus proceedings against acting County Clerk l-.tlic Shoemaker to com pel payment of a back salary claim. Mr. Wickham claims that the Su promo Court in reient decisions has rulul against the right of counties to mtiate legislation, iitiil lays claim to a salary as provided 111 a legislative hiil, adopted in RU-'!, and $-"uil per year in excess of the initiative bill salary. The Fourth Liberty Loan The campaign for the Fourth Liberty Loan will la kin Septemer 2S and close October p). The result of the loan will be watched with keen interest in Lurope, not only by our associates in the w ar against the Teutonic powers, but by our enemies. It will be re garded by them as a measure of the American people's support of the war. The Hermans know foil well the tre mendous weight and signiticance of popular support of the war, of the peo ple at home backing up the army in the lieid. As the loan succeeds our enemies will sorrow : as it falls short thev will rejoice. Every dollar sub scribed will help and encourage the American soldiers and hurt and depress l.ne eneiiies of America. Shall we spare our dollars while they spare not their very lives'.' Lewis Rhnades Extinguishes Fire Lewis O. Rhoades, volunteer deputy tire warden, extinguished a brush lire that was threatening timber of the Mid dle Valley last Friday. The fire, it is stated, was started from careless brush tires set by Flint Bradford, a rancher. Mr. Rcadford was warned by the for etsry otlicials. "Some of the ranchers seem to think that the closed season on brush tires is over because we have had some showers," says Deputy Fire Warden Ldgington, "but they will realize that this is not so if they get the law after them." liottle Message Says Cyclops Captured A message, enclosed in a bottle, and recently picked up off the Atlantic coast, bears the brief message that the Cyclops giant collier lost since last April, on which was Chas. Filz, a member ot the crow, was captured by a Herman submarine. The new process w ill eliminate not ur.ly the exjiense of v, rapping paper, the cardboard tiller reducing the p.per cost of packing one cent per box over the 1 Id system, but the new boxes cost five cents less, at current quotations, than the standard boxes now used by Northwestern growers. The boxes used under the new system also Weigh far less than those of standard design, and Mr. Sykes claims that more of them can he placed in a car. Thus the transportation charges on a carload of fruit will be materially reduced. The old standard method of packing was characterized by the bulge 111 the box, which kept the pack tight. It was necessary to stack the apples iu ears 011 their sides, liider the new system the fruit will he placed m cars ini end, as oranges are now shipped. While the bulge is eliminated under the new system evolved by Mr. Sykes, the ap ples, arranged geometrically w ith eight poinds of contact for each apple, pres sure applied, w hen the top is nailed on, it is claimed, is equally distributed ami the fruit roaches market without any blemishes that cause deterioration or detract from its sale. Mr. Svkes claims that his method meets wuh the approval of recent or der of shipping authorities w ho placed a ban mi fruit containers that required a bulge. Rough handling of boxes with buliring sides, it is said, results of tin iu fiuit reaching maiket in a badly bruised condition. Because practically ail growers are supplied with standard boxes for this st.iM'ii's reqoiiements, the new system w ill be tried out only on a small exper iment! scale. Mr, Sy kes has demon strated his new system in southern Oregon. From here he will go to Vvasiiignon fruit districts. The item oust rat 1011 was held under the auspices of the Blake-McFall Paper Co., of I'orlland, which has made arrange ments to supply Nothwestern fruit growers with a limited number of the new boxes and paper layer divisions. Mr. Sykes, as ho says, has been a tramp fruit acker for the past 2." year's. Most of the commercial packs adopted by Northwestern fruit growers were originated by him.
