During the present week the Grange has ad dressed to all candidates for county cttii.es the following letter: "The undersigned legislative com mittee ot Hood River County Pomo na Grange desires to know your at titude toward our county salary law, creattd through the initiative in our county in 1114. "This salary law was approved by the people in this county by a vote of 1502 for and 6t8 against. Some efforts have been made to have this law set aside and declared unconsti tutional. We do not doubt the legal ity ot this law and we are certain of its moral intent; and we believe you fully understand the desire of the I tople of this county who are to be come your employers. "If you are elected to the office to v.hich you have been nominated, will you ask for or accept only the salary offered to you by the people of this county through our initiative law? "A definite answer to the above question is desired. We do not ques tion your right to select the political party with which you are affiliated, but we are very much interested hi giving our support to only those can didates who will ever give assis tance in upholding our initiative laws, wheh represent true democra cy." Legislative Committee: A. I. Mason, James R. Forden, G. II. Robbins, O. L. Walters, A. W. Peters. County Judge L. N. Blowers was the first candidate to put himself on record by sending the following an swer to the Grange letter: "In reply to your communication of this date will say that from the date of my appointment as county judge I have accepted only the amount voted by the people of this county as my salary. 'I took this action without advice cr urging from anyone because I be lieve that, regardless of the legal as pects of the matter, the wishes of my employers, as expressed at the polls by more than 1,500 votes, la en titlted to more consideration from mo than a law supported by a very few petitioners and passed before the people generally had any know ledge of the matter. "If I should be elected in Novem ber, you may rest assured that I will not change my position In this mat ter." LEVI STRAUSS k CO., Su Francisco - Mfrs. of "FrttJom-Allt" a now f ormont tor wooioa SOLDIER BOYS TO GET CANNED FRUIT Until earlier varieties of the 1918 crop have ripened, soldiers passing through Hood Kiver on troop trains will have to forego the pleasure of eating Hood River apples. The last 17 hoxes ot the 1VJ17 crop, reserved espe cially for soldiers, were distributed list week. Ihe Ked Cross canteen committee is now engaged in assem bling from city and valley homes do nations of canned fruits to be stored at the station to await arrival of troop trains. Until fresh apples are avail able, canned fruits will be presented to the passing soldiers. Mr. Fredricy estimates that 2,f00 boxes of apples have been distributed to troop trains passing here. Plans for giving straw berries to sol diers aboard troop trains have been abandoned, since the fruit cannot be kept for any length of time at the sta tion, and since the trains are due to arrive very soon after the canteen committee is notitied the members will not have time to assemble the fruit fresh from the tie Ids. The soldiers of troop trains will feast when cherry time arrives. Cherries can be handled conveniently, and they will keen for a rather pro longed period at the station. Members of the Canteen committee declare that thay deserve no credit for the task of cheering soldiers with gifts of apples and delicacies. "VVe have simply been the medium of assembling the gifts," says Mrs. L. M. Bentley. "The people of the Hood Kiver valley deserve the credit. We wish to express to them our sincere thanks." ention at Pine Grove, criticizing the indiscriminate sending of cigarettes to the soldiers. Rev. M. L. Hutton of Riverside Congregational Church last week took issue with Mr. Lewel len, describing his attitude as "non sensical and narrow." Now Rev. K. C. Newham. pus tor of the Pine Grcve church, replies to Mr. Hutton : as follows: ! "Rev. M. L. Hutton has given pub lie criticism of an address that was i given here last Sunday at our coun t Sunday school convention by Rev. i J. B. Lewellen. j "I desire to say that had Mr. Hut i ton been present and heard for titn j self the splendid address of Mr. 1 ewellen I cannot conceive how he could have found any Just cause for i riticlsm. "The speech referred to was quite : in harmony with the resolution re ; Karding the sending of cigarettes to ; soldiers which was passed without ' a dissenting vote and with abundant ' afplause. ! "The pustor ot Asbury Methodist ; church made it quite clear that the ; ( hjection was not to the supplying of ! c'garettes to men w ho had ulready ; formed the tobacco habit, but to the sending of same indiscriminately by the Red Cross societies in every comfort kit. The latter, it was shown, often provided the first and power fnl inducement to young men to smoke who otherwise would feel no particular inclination to do so. "The use of tobacco in ull forms, particularly In cigarettes, has been demonstrated by modern science to be detrimental to health and often disastrous in its effects upon the youth of our country. The sale of tobacco to minors is in direct viola tion of the laws of many of our states. When every resource of morale, material and money must be husbanded for the successful prose cution of the war, kindness, patriot ism, reason and religion all demand that we desist from this buneful practice." Library Notes The following new books, includ ing several on war subjects, have been added to the Hood River pub lic library: Huard "My Home in the Field of Mercy." Gerard "Face to Face with Kai Rerism." Pulmer "With Our Faces in the Light." French "Retreat from Mous." Dawson "Carry On." Krvine "Changing Winds." Xoyes "Sherwood," a play. lloxie "Trade Unionism in United States." Turner "Aircraft of Today." King "Fundamental Questions Zutblin "American Municipal Progress." Read "Mothercraft Manual At the last meeting of Pine Grove Grunge resolution were adopted as ' fi.Hows: 1 Whereas: Economy is being urced ; cf us by our National government, ia order to be better prepared in as sisting to win the world's greatest ttrugale for democracy, and Whereas: There has been a re -i iiijt-st made to our county court to; give financial aid in vssisting the I ity of Hood River in purchasing nd equipping an automobile camp ing park, on the Heights in the tou of Hood River, and Whereas: If such an adjunct is I needed ut all, or is beneficial to any of our citizens, it should be financed by the town of Hood River, and Whereas: If smh an Investment is a wise expenditure of our ticblii' noney, the location of a public camping ground should be adjacent to the Columbia Highway, and not one mile from it on top of u hill v, here the tourist shr.ll be compelled to climb and descend a grade from 12 to 14 per cent, which is a road condition of no credit to any of us. Therefore, Re It Resolved: That Fiuo Grove Grange does most ear nestly arpeal to our Cornty Ci urt to refusa to give any finuncial aid whatsoever, to any such autoniubile park for the following reasons: First: It is not economy to do so, and especially during our stringent financial conditions in this county at this time. Second: The location is absolutely wrong. We should be usliamof' to compel our tourists to climb such steep public roads, lt is nothing of huh we should feel proud. Third: It is strictly a city proposi tion and our county fi'nds should not be so expended because our tax budget has made no provisions for such expenditure of county funds, and I!e lt Further Resolved: That a copy ot these resolutions be sent to our County Court and to each of our lecal newspapers. Sold everywhere. MR. APPLE GROWER Don't place your order for a grading machine until you have seen the 1918 model CUTLER. A new sorting table is used, which will reduce your cost of sorting by 40 or 50 per cent. The fruit is moved across in front of the sorters j and is revolved slowly so that the sort er can easily see any defects and only picks out the culls and lower grades. ! The predominant grade passes auto- j maticaily into the grader without any j handling by the sorter, and it is this fact which results in the maximum ! output per sorter with minimum cost per box. Don't buy a machine just because its first cost is low. It's very easy to drop $100 in wages by using an ineffici ent grader. CUTLER GRADERS pay ; for themselves in a short time. We will have a demonstration in Hood River in the near future, notice of which will be given in the papres. CUTLER MANUFACTURING CO.
