TQE HOOD MVER-MOSIER EOAD W have the word of the State High way Commission that an agreement between the Commission and theO.-W. R. ft N. Co. reUtive to a right of way for the Columbia Highway between here and Moeier will be reached in the near future. The Commission realizes the importance of this link of the Highway, and only after a careful ex amination was the river grade route chosen. While many Hood River people early in the fall expressed to the State High way Commission a hope that the east ern extension of the highway might penetrate far enough into the orchard districts that the touring motorist would be able to witness the panorama of orchards, the river route was select ed because of its practicability. Hood River people expressed themselves as satisfied with the results of the ulti mate decision, and every day one hears someone express the hope that the matters betweea the Commission and the railway company will reach a speedy and satisfactory conclusion. Time was when the mark "made in Germany" was the proper credential for a toy in this country, but that's all gone now. German dolls are "verboten." Other countries are too busy for toy making, and ifthey weren't, , ship space would be needed for something else. There will be no toys from the Orient because of the demand for steamers. But the Liberty toys.'.made by clever and nimble Amer ican fingers, Sammy dolls, Red Cross dolls, Pershing dolls and Hoover dolls, are already arriving. Let Oregon pause for a moment in the sorrowful meditation that grief brings. Oregon has lost one of her first citizens, a man who fought for what he considered the right, whatever the odds. Thirty has sounded for J. F. Carroll, editor and publisherjfor so many years of the Portland Evening Telegram. , Here's one of the best slogans we have heard. Try it on your friends. It was sent the Glacier by that veteran newspaper man and optimist, Albert Tozier : Reduce the eat in wheat and meat And toot the tute in substitute. Clean up that unsightly rubbish back of your building and thus eliminate a dangerous fire menace. Apple Freight Increace Protested At a conference Tuesday fruit ship pers decided to send a strong delega tion to Portland tomorrow, when apple men from all Northwestern districts will meet with Frank J. Miller, of the Public Service Commission, for the purpose of initiating arguments to the Interstate Commerce Commission against the proposed IS pr cent feight increase on apples. The Commission will begin the hearing of the railway companies' petition for the increased revenue December 17. Fruit men declare that apple price increases have not been proportionate to the increased cost of productiionand that freght increase asked by the rail roads will strike a serious blow at the industry.
