Stone, now in train, ing at the San Pedro, Cailf., submarine base, recalled to David I. Stone that be had reached hia 64th birthday. The young man informed hia aging father that out of hia pay of $36 monthly he had arranged to have $20 sent him each month. "Never in my life," aaid Mr. Stone, "have I received a birthday present that made me happier. I am mighty proud of my eon. - Young Stone, who enlisted in Port land recently, was first stationed at the Bremerton Navv Yard. In hia letter to his father he tslls of the trip of himself and 83 other sailors to tne south. "We traveled on two Pullman cars," he said, "and we were always first to get to the diners. They treated us roavlly. We were allowed 75 cents for Young Stone states that he is train ing to be a mechanic aboard a subma rine. Those who get low grades, how ever, he savs. will be riven additional training and be detailed to the work of manning submarine destroyers. "We are on a big dock belonging to the city of Los Angeles," says the young sailor. "The dock is laid out oh the inside just like a ship. JOHN BRADLEY FATALLY STRICKEN Elizabeth Bradley, widow of the late John Bradlev. naased awav Wednesday night of last week at the home of her cousin, E. R. Bradley, from paralysis, with which she was stricken the night before. Mrs. Bradley, a native of On tario, Canada, and 69 years of age, had resided with the family of her cousin since her husband died 10 years ago. She had resided in Hood River for 20 years. The remains were shipped Friday by S. E. Bartmess to Davton. where fu neral services were held, interment following beside her husband in the cemetery there. Mrs. Bradley is sur vived by a son and a daughter. They are Mrs. Chester Shute, of Odell, and Nathan Bradley, of Wapato, Wash. Berstein horticutlural expert of Portland, who has finished the work of inspecting shipments of fruit assem bled at Underwood by the North Pa cific Fruit Distributors, was here last week visiting fruit assembling ware houses and studying local methods. Mr. Bernstein, who was formerly ' as sociated with Mosier fruit producing concerns, says the White Salmon val ley fruit crop of this season is of fine quality. Special School Meeting Dee. 5 A special meeting of the city school district has been called for December 5 for the Durrxwe of voting a special tax for the coming year. According to a budget just prepared by the school board, the sum of $32,000 will be need ed the coming year in addition to the district's total income of $13,878.60. The largest item in the budget of next year s expenses is teachers' salaries. for which the sum of $29,310 must be appropriated. Apples Taken For Experiments W. C. Quick, a representative of the united states ueparment or Agricul ture, was here last week gathering up assorted varieties of apples which will be distributed amonir commercial stor age plants of different parts of the country to be subjected to tests to determine keeping quality. The fruit will be kept in storage in which ap ples are ordinarily held. . Following the experiments the fruit will be salvaged by sales at auction, and the government will pay the co operative agency the oinerence be tween the sum realized and the pool prices for the various varieties com mandeered.
