Rt Tark CKy ASS'N MEMBERSHIP GROWERS MUST FUR- SAVED MUCH MONEY i NISH ACCOMODATIONS Due to the organized cooperation of the membership of the Apple Growera Association and the inauguration of new methods of cultivation that have been suggested and worked out by the local branch Of the Oregon experiment station.according to Sam G. Campbell, the increased cost of producine apples for 1917 aa compared with 1914. the year the great European war began, has been negligible, except for the items of wrapping paper and box nails. Naila have increased from $3.25 to $5 per keg. Paper has increased to such an extent that growers are not likely to wrap their lower grades and off varieties this season. According to figures that have been compiled by Mr. Campbell and Irl R. Blagg, his assistant at the Association warehouses, the prices of spray mater ials and boxes remain at about the same figures that prevailed in 1914. An increase in labor of about 10 per cent is expected this season. Formerly the apple grower received no return for the clean cultivation practiced in orchards. Now, following experiments of representative growers and experiment station experts, apple growers harvest clover, alfalfa and other such crops from their orchards. Cows and hogs are'raised, and a neat profits derived from orchard cultiva tion. - "But for the Association in antici pating the needs of the growers and making long term contracts, these prices for 1917," says Mr. Campbell, "would be materially increased. The Association in this wise has saved its members thousands of dollars." "If the strawberry growers of Hood River apply for enlisted laborers under the plana inaugurated by the Oregon Argtcultural College and expect to get them," savs Mrs. C A. Bell, who with Mrs. J. E. Ferguson has been ap pointed by Mrs. W. F. Lara way, presi dent of the Woman's club, on a com mittee to investigate the conditions on ranches of such applicants for labor, "they must show us conclusively that they will provide comfortable quarters for the workers." Mrs. Bell declares that Hood River ore hard is ts deserve keenest criticism for their failure in former years to properly care for their transient har vest hands. The appointment of the local com mittee came from instructions of Mrs. C. H. Castner, president offthe State Federation, who has written all club presidents asking for similar commit tees in all parts of the state. The committees will make their reports to county agents or other similar author ities. DR.
