PHONE 1394 APPLE TREES SHOW A HEAVY BLOOM Although two weeks behind the nor mal time, the apple trees of the. valley have burst into blossom. Sunday ana Monday the valley was at its best From points of eminence around the fruit district, the falley has the ap pearance or a great flowered dish. Around the lower edge are the remains of the virgin forests which once reared their monster trees over the entire dis trict. The foliage of these conifers forms a green band more deeply vivid than the hue of the Irish shamrock. Above the firs and pines appear the lighter green of such shrubbery as the willow, surrounding rugged oaks and Oregon grape, and the rank growth of poison oak has a beauty that attracts. The bare sides of lava ranges are turning from winter's gray as they don the springtime jacket of grass that will remain green for a few weeks. Except for the wind tossed rain clouds that hovered over the peak of Mount Hood, the mid-Columbia sky -was a limpid blue. The bottom of the great 100,000 acre dish showed from the vantage points of the high places around the rim like a huge garden, laid out according to the whim of some genius of decora tion. The homes of orchardists and ranchers appeared surrounded by the pink and white sea of blooming apple trees. The total acreage of blossoms is about 15,000 acres. But Hood River orchardists for the season of 1917 have foregone the pleas ures of the usual apple blossom festi val. Visitors were welcome, but the fruit grower and rancher, because of the delay of the seasons and because of the increased demand for his labors in caring for vegetable gardens that are being grown between his trees, has found not time for lormal enter tainment.
