AN ACCEPTABLE PRESENT
Occasionally we read tbe remark! of
ome roan or woman, recalling the
custom! of former generations, who
poke with regret of the passing of tbe
period when friends were accustomed
at interavls throughout the year to
write lengthy letters to each other.
The letters of today, it is tiue. are
too short. They are significant of hurry
and bustle. The telegraph line and tbe
network system of telephones elimin
ates the written message of former
days to a great extent.
Today we fail to write enough let
ters or long enough letters. Perhaps
you number among your acquaintances
one who writes occasionally a long,
breezy epistle, full of news about
himself, about the city or town in
which he lives and about memories of
days gone by. Maybe he touches on
some quesiton of science, politics or
other topic in which you are both in
terested. But all of the above is just leading
down to our primary motive in writing
this. Christmastime approaches, the
period when members of family and
friends are draw more closelyn to each
other than at any other period of the
year. We suggest the long, newsy
letter as a Christmas present. We be
lieve that it would be far more accept
able than the worthless kmckknack
that is often purchased.
And when you send a gift back home
to mother, even though its value be
tbe greatest, don't forget to accom
pany it by a letter. She'll be interest
ed in all you choose to tell her. If you
have prospered and have won success,
no one will be more joyful than she.
Or if .vou have a story of regrets, a
tale of struggle, of hardships and mis
haps, your sincerest sympathizer will
be reached when she hears from you.
Don't forget the Christmas letter.
MORE ABOUT LOGANBERRIES
We haven't heard anything recently
on the proposed growing of loganber
ries in commercial quantities on Hood
River valley ranches. We believe the
plans are worth more than a mere
sporadic consideration. Loganberry
juice, in a few Unhurt months, has
jumped to first fame throughout the
country. Tbe popularity is not a pass
ing one. Loagnberry juice bids fair to
be sold in even greater quantities than
grape juice. Tbe tide against alcoholic
beverages is daily growing stronger.
Loganberries, as has been demon
strated on tbe few tracts planted by
local orchardistp, can be grown as per
fectly here as in any other point on the
Pacific coast. Local fruit, it is said,
has a better quality of juice and more
of a body, when the product is desired
for drying. The recent suggestion that
a hedge of loganberries be planted
around all orchards, we think, a good
one. The hedges will ornament the
districts of apple trees and at the same
time bring in a handsome return to
growers of apples.
Tbt women aura "went and done it"
over at Umatilla last weelj. Mrs. E .
E. SUrcher defeated ber hubsand for
mayor of that eastern Oregon munici
pality. The following eouncilwomen
were elected: Mrs. C. C. Brownell,
Mrs. Roy P. Paula, Mra. B. Spinning
and Mrs. H. P. Moans. Mrs. J. H.
Cherry and Mrs. Robert Merrick were
elected respectively to the offices of
city recorder and treasurer. Tbe
Umatilla election will probably "put
the bug" in the heads of ambitious
women of other Northwestern municipalities.
Tbe Hood River News makes the
error this week of stating that the
Coe primary school was named in
honor of H. C. Coe. The name was
suggested by pioneer valley residents
who wish to thus honor the father and
mother of tbe above mentioned mem
ber of the family. Nathaniel Coe and
his helpmeet will always be held in
blghetit regard by those who are versed
in pioneer history. .We suggest that
stories of pioneer days be taught the
youngsters who will attend the hand
some school that bears their revered
name. H. C. Coe may well take pride
in the honor thus accorded his forebears.
The Hood River housewife who has
a stock of water glass eggs on hand is
fieling pretty skookum just now, thank
you.
The proposed Hood River country
club is annther direct evidence of the
stimulus of the Columbia River High
Boreas is frosting the surrounding
ridgetops, while Hood River merchants
are designing handsome window dis
plays, the stage is being set for the
Yuletide holidays.
Hood River Red Spitzenburgs and
Hood River Rhode Island Red chickens
are always first.
Eleven more days until stocking
hanging time.
Kaestner Buys Another 5 Acres
W. S. Kaestner, who recently arrived
here from Chicago to make his home
on a 15 acre tract purchased from
frank daddy on the West Side, bought
an additional five acre tract the first of
the week from M. V. Chambers. Mr.
Kaestner will make extensive improve
ments on both placeB. He has already
equipped the remodeled home on the
Caddy place with a water system and
has hot and cold water in his home.
Mr. Kaestner's next move, he says,
will be to install an electric lighting
system for his ranches.
Brumbaugh Here Saturday
Prof. J. P. Brumbaugh, of tbe Ore
gon Agricultural College, recognized
authority on water laws, will deliver
an address on this subject next Satur
day afternoon at 2 o'clock at Pine
Grove hall. Mr. Brumbaugh will talk
Saturday night at Odell on"Boj craft."

Ertie Serenaded
A brief pandemonium, reigned in
Hood River Tuesday night. Loud hur
rahs and the clatter of many cowbells
called merchants, late shoppers and
cinematograph patrons to the street
as members of the Volunteer fire de
partment went marching by. The
firemen had been giving a charivari to
George Ertle, a member of the depart
ment, and bride. Each husky flrelad
was accompanying his shouts with a
jangling cowbell.
After a half hour's serenade of thetr
fellow fireman, the column of volunteer
department members marched down
the main business street and returned
the bells to the hardware store from
which they had been borrowed.
Special Concert
