Beginning last spring, when tbe Ap ple Growers Association and the agen cies across the Columbia almost simul taneously dropped- away from tbe North Pacific Fruit Distributors, tbe Underwood and White Salmon associa tions came under a joint management, and an agreement was made with the local salea agency for the handling of the year'a atraw berry crops. A hope is expressed by local fruit men that tbe harmonious relations of the past year may continue in the future. "For the best interests of all three of tbe communities," says Wilmer Sicg,"it will be well to work together, because of the fact that the fruits of all the districts are similar in quality and variety." Underwood-White Salmon Plan Union (From the Enterprise) The directors and management of the Apple Growers Union of the White Salmon Valley, Underwood, and the White Salmon Valley Fruit Growers Union have been working for the past month on a possible plan to unite the two districts in one organization. A committee was appointed from each Union and atfer repeated meetings and consultations with both boarda of di rectors it is believed a plan has been worked out that will meet with the approval of all concerned and the mat ter will be submitted to the stockhold ers at meetings to be called during the first week in January. For several years it has been appar ent to many of the growers in both Unions that it was not conducive to the best interests of the country nor good business for the two districts so closely allied in location, fruit products, marketing facilities, etc., to be work ing separately. 'I he White Salmon Union has, this fall, handled three cars and some local shipment of apples out of Lyle for growers in the Appleton-Timber Valley district and it is hoped for the best in terests of all that the Lyle, Appleton, Timber Valley, and in fact all districts, from the Klickitat river to the Little White Salmon river can be included in this one strong organization with ware houses at Lyle, Major Creek, White Salmon, Underwood and Hood. 0 30C 3 Cm 30 WE HAVE JUST RECEIVED A FRESH SUPFLY OF Nitrate of SodaMuriate of Potash AND ALL KINDS OF FERTILIZERS COME TO US DIRECT FOR WOOD.FIBERED HOUSE PLASTER CEMENT AND LIME AS WE UNLOAD DIRECT FROM THE CARS STRANAHAN & CLARK Hood River, Oregon 0 The Purity Dairy Co. Mew Terk dry Bacon Will Go To Portland Following the sale last week of its river steamer .State of Washington to The Dalles, Portland & Astoria Navi gation Co., The Dalles-Columbia Kivcr line, while it will maintain its dock, will discontinue its local agency. "Hereafter," said Chas. E. Steel smith, manager of the company, who was in the city Saturday, "we will only handle freight to and from points on the upper river. We will carry no freight from Hood River to Portland." P. E. Bacon, who has been agent for The Dalles-Columbia line, left Monday for Portland. The Taft Transfer Co. will hereafter look after any business that the company may have. "If any bills have been left here by us," said Mr. Steelsmith, "I want to assure the Hood River people that they have been overlooked. In case anyone has an account against us, I would ask that jt be given to the Taft Transfer Co. that they may forward it to us for selttlement. Rains and Snows are Welcome The heavy rains and snowfalls of the past six weeks have been welcomed by ranchers. The precipitation two weeks ago, as was found by crews of men en gaged for the Central Contract & Tim ber Co. on the East Fork irrigation system, had soaked the soil to a depth of five feet. The soil of the orchards was lacking in moisture last year. The rainfall and snow of the winter were below normal, and because the surface ot the earth was frozen last November to an unusu al depth, the water from rains and snows melted on the surface and (lowed into streams. War Upon Pain Pain is a visitor' to every home and usually it comes quite unexpectedly ; bui you are prepared for every emergency if you keep a email bottle of Sloan's Lini ment handy. It is the greatest pain killer no rubbing required it drives the pain away. It is really wonderful. Mervin II Soister, Berkeley, Calif., writes: "Last Saturday, after tramping around the Panama Exposition with wet feet, I came home with my neck so stiff that I could't tarn. I applied Sloan's Liniment free'y and went to bed. To my surprise, next morning the stiffness hau almost disappeared. Four hours alter the second application I was as good as new." March, 1915. Painters and decorators hava bean at work for the paot 10 days on th inter ior of the Gem. and tha walla of the playhouse and the ceiling have been cleaned and given a coat of dark tint ing material. New ventilating appar atus haa been installed, and tbe Gem's interior has taken on new beauty. The air is pure and wholesome. Because of the dark walla and ceilings, tbe over head flights can be kept burning while the picturea are being shown, and pat roris entering the playhouse do not have to grope in darkness to find seats. Art Kolstad. who haa an extensive experience in pictures, is still with C U. Dakin. Wednesday and Thursday Wednesday and .Thursday, December 29 and 30, Manager Dakin has booked the seven reel Selig Red Seal play, "The Rosary." This production is adapted from the well known play by Edward E. Rose and tells the story of the many events which crowd the life of Father Kelly. In his early years his struggle between the love of a girl and the call of the church is shown, while late in life he becomes the pivot about which a dometsic tragedy revolves. His ward, a young broker, unjustly sus pects his wife of being false to him and Father Kelly, who is visiting them when they quarrel, is at last instru mental in uniting them and again bringing happiness into both their lives. Charles Clary makeB a beautiful char acter out of the priest, while Kathlyn Williams and Wheeler Oakman portray the young couple in a way which makes their characters appear to really live. ' ' . Scab to Be Discussed During the past season occurred the worst epidemic of apple and pear scab that Oregon, as a whole, has known for-several years. In spite of this fact, however, many growers were able to produce clean fruit by proper Bpraying methods. A very Jarge pro portion of the fruit men, however, met serious losses from this disease on ac count their neglect of spraying or their lack of knowledge in regard to' the materials to use or 'correct time of ap plication. The latest information in regard to methods of scab control will be discussed by Prof. H. P. Barss, head of the department of Botany and plant pathology, in one of a serieB of lectures on plant diseases to be given at the winter short course held at the Oregon Agricultural College at Corval lis from Jaunary 10 to February 4. This is shown in so many pale faces, lean bodies, frequent colds, and lack of ambition. For all 6uch children we say with unmistakable earnestness: They need Scott's Emulsion, and need it now.
