L CARTER'S PARENTS (By Frd Locklej in Portland Journal) Two of the moot interesting charac ter! who attended the recent reunion of the Oregon Pioneers in Portlsnd were David and Joseph Carter. David Carter, who lives at Sheridan, was bom on March 13, 1H42. at Oregon City, and Joseph waa born on January 22. 1M5, on tt.e old Mission farm on Mission Bottom, north of Salem. Their father. David Carter, waa born on the shores of Lake ChampJiin, Vermont, in 1793. Their mother, Orpha Lankton. came from New York to Oregon in 1H40. Joseph Carter, who lives at Hood Kiver, gave me a brief history of bis father and mother, of their meeting, their marriage and their .life Jin Ore gon. It is a atory full of romance. A book could be written around the inter view 1 had with Mr. f arter. 1 will not attempt to tell the story as he told it to me, but will simply give a brief outline. In November, 1838, Jason Lee ap peared btfore the board of missions in New York City and won then to his views of enlarging'the Oregon mission. The miFsinnary board chartered the ship Lausanne and on the 9th of Octo ber, 1839, she cleared for the mouth of the Columbia. Mr. Carter's mother, Orpha Lankton, was one of the recruits for the mission field. On April II they anchored at Hono lulu. Here they spent 17 days visiting the missionaries to the Sandwich Isl ands. Here Mies Urpha Lankton met her fate. David Carter was building trays for feeding silk worms on mul berry leaves for Horace Holden, later a long time resident of Salem, Ore., and then a silk raiser at Honlulu. David Carter met Orpha Lankton and he lost all interest in silk worms. In those days courtships were brief. The marriage ceremony often followed the introduction by only a few days, but Miss Lankton, having enlinted to come as a layman in the missionary work did not feel'she could quit with honor, at Honolulu, and insisted on go ing on to her destination. David Car ter quit his job and arranged to go to Oregon on the Lausanne with the mis sionary party. This gave him a full month to pursue his courtship and he made the most of the moonlight nights of spring. David Carter and Mies Orpha Lank ton were soon married and their wed ding trip was a journey by canoe up the Columbia to The Dalles where Mr. Carter took charge of the mission farm. ODELL RANCHERS WITHOUT WATER Strong pleas were made last Friday afternoon at the meeting of the board of directors of the Last Fork irriga tion system by the ranchers of the Odell district for more water, it having been declared that the crops of 400 acres of land were jeopardized by lack of irrigation. The distributing system of the Odell lateral is said to be sadly inefficient and mismanaged. The mem bers of the board are taking every pos sible step with funds available to tem porarily relieve the situation. Two thousand feet of old bored pipe supplying the I'log and Moe oichnrds at the top of Tucker hill have gone to pieces, and the owners of the land have purchased pipe for a premanent dis tribution system, which is being in stalled. They have the promise of the district to remunerate them later as funds are available. Members of the district board vis ited the Odell district Saturday and inspected the lateral of that commun ity. Tiiey report that they found everything working well. FURROW HAS BEEN AP POINTED ROADMASTER H. L. Furrow, who for several years has been road supervisor of the Willow Flat district.was appointed county road master last week. Mr. Furrow, who with his brother owns a ranch in the Willow Flat country, is a graduate of the Iowa State College at Ames, la. He has had experience in engineering work in Inwa and also at Kitzville, Wash., where he was employed by the Northern Pacific 11. K. Co. A question has been raised as to the legality of the appointment of Mr. Furrow. Geo. K. V, ilbur, attorney for Murray Kay, who recently bought suit against the county to force the court to put him in charge of road work, con tends that the appointment should have been made the lirBt of the year. Judge Stanton, however, says that the ap pointment can be made at any time during the year, provided there be a vacancy. Kresse lias Sanitary fups l ast week the Kresse Drug Co. in stalled a unique system for the service of ice cream and cold drinks. Every drink will be served in a fresh, clean glazed pnper cup. These are received in hermetically sealed receptacles and as needed are removed by the man serv ing the drink. This sanitary service has amused no small interest among the public calling in the store. New Automobiles Purchased During the past two weeks two fine new iiatnmubiles have been purchased by Hood Kiver people. C. S. Fields riHs purchased a new Hudson touring car, six cylinder. No more handsome machine has ever been seen here. And just is fine a piece of mechanism and design of body and line is the new White Gas car bought last week by C. Detrman. These two gentlemen are preparing for the opening of the Co Itinil in highway. In perfect health we hardly realize that we have a network of nerves, bat when health is ebbing, when strength is declin ing, the same nervous system gives the alarm in headaches, tiredness, dreamful sleep, irritability and nnlesa corrected, leads straight to a breakdown. To correct nervousness, Scott's Emul sion is exactly what you should take; it rich nutriment gets into the blood and rich blood feeds the tiny nerve-cells while the whole system responds to its refresh ing tonic force. It is free from alcohol. 0 Scott & Bownc. Bloomfield, N. J. COTTAGE HOSPITAL Hood River's Medical Institution Open to the public for treat ment of Medical and Surgi cal cases.
