They arrived last Thursday and were shown over the city by Kenneth McKay. Dumble, Senator Chamberlain announced that he and Senator Lane had recommended an ap pointee for the local postoilice to suc ceed J. P. Lucas, whose term of cillice expires thismonth. ' Senator Chamber lain failed to name the successful can didate. Ihe letter to Dr. Dumtle was in reply to a letter of recommendation for one of the applicant?. It is pre sumed that the president will not make an appointment until con(;rees con venes and a confirmation can.be made. The three candidates for the post mastership are V. C. lirock, T. A. Keavis and Prof. L. F. Henderson. Mrs. Phillips Dies at Advanced Age Mrs. Martha Phillips died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. K. Heecher, at Iiellinghatn, Wash., Fri day, June 18, at the age of 76 years, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Phillips had lived in Hellingham 13 years, coming from Wisconsin, where she resided for AO yearn. She is survived by one son, F. W. Phillips, of HelliiiKham, and by five daughters, Mrs. William H. Hei.l, Mrs. VV. R. Heecher and Mrs. (i. L. Scarlett, of Hellitigham, Mrs. A. (). Stauh, of Mul len, Idaho, and Mrs. J. M. Hayes, of Eau Claire, Wis.; also by one sister and two brothers, living in the east. Mrs. Phillips spent the years 1911 and 1912 here with Mr. and Mrs. Scar lett, who at that time resided on Ihcir Willow Flat ranch. The funeral was held Sunday, June 20, at 2.30 p. m at Hingham's parlors, Kev. U. C. .Squire olliciuting. Interment was at Hay View cemetery. Lindsay Creek Popular Lindsay creek, just west of Shell Rock mountain, has become one of the most popular spots on the Columbia for summer picnics. Up-river towns people prefer it to lionneville, and the river boats, carrying excursions to the scenic place, where the torrent of icy water bursts from the top of the Co lumbia gorge and cascades down to the water level, of the big stream, are boosting the spot, which is in charge of Uus Mohr, of The Dalles. The Steamer Tuhoma will carry a boatload of The Dulles citizens to Lindsay creek next Sunday. Strawberries Good Travelers Hood River strawberries are good travelers. John K. Edgar, who re cently shipped crates of the fruit grown on his ranch on the Dee Hat, has just received a letter from Mrs. Fdgar E. Mason, his mother-in-law, of Urook. Held, Mo., who stated that the berries arrived in excellent condition. "In deed," wrote Mrs. Mason, "The fruit contained fewer bad berries than the boxes of local grown berries purchased fresh in our markets." A crate of berries was shipped to W. G. Taft Will Visit State William Howard Taft, ex-president of the United States, will pass through Hood Kiver on the morning of Sunday, August 22. Mr. Taft will come here from lioise, where he will be the gueat of Colvin Cobb, editor of the Idaho Daily Statesman. He has accepted an invitation to take luncheon with the Portland Press club members on arrival in the Rose City. The ex -president will be greeted here by a large crowd of Hood River admirers. O'Connor Taken to The Dalles John O'Connor, the boy implicated in thefts at the Cross & Boxer store recently, who while being teturned to Hood Kiver made his escape from Of ficer dinger at the Portland Union station, was recaptured and brought here the latter part of last week. On account of his adeptness in picking locks, he was taken to The Dalles for safekeeping. MAZAMAS PREPARING FOR HOOD CLIMB A large party of Mszamaa from Port land will arrive bera Saturday night on their way to Mount Hood, an ascent of which will be made on Monday, July 6. tbey will be taken to Parkdale aboard a special Mount Hood Railway train Saturday night. Sunday will be spent in traveling to Mazama camp near the timber line at Cloud Cap Inn. The party will start on tbe aacent of Hood at 3.30 o'clock Monday morning. On the return from tbe mountain the climbers will be met by Upper Valley automobiles and rigs and taken to the Parkdale station. The party will meet at the summit another, which will travel from Portland by way of Gov ernment Camp. BASE BALL Sunday Will Umpire Billy Sunday has procured a baseball rule book for the year and is making preparations to umpire the Independ ence Day celebration game to be played here Monday between the amateur teams of Hood River and White Salm on. This acquiescence on the part of the noted evangelist, who waa once a mainstay of the Chicago White Sox, has created a new interest in the Fourth of July celebration, and the baseball game will be tbe star feature of the event. Billy Sunday is an elusive person, and it was difficult for the program committee of the proposed celebration to corner him. He waa chased down last Thursday afternoon by D. G. CruikBhank, who caught him iat the store of J. R. Kinsey. "May 1 speak to you a few minutes, Mr. Sunday?" asked Mr. Cruikshank. "If you will hurry," snapped the evangelist, "I am through here and my car is waiting." "I won't keep you long," Mr. Cruik shank barked back at him. "Will you upmire our baseball game next Monday? ' Who plays?" asked Sunday. "Hood River-White Salmon." "Where's money go?" "Team's amateur proceeds main tain them." "1 don't know the late rules," and the evangelist smiled, unbending for the first time. "We'll accept all your decisions," and Mr. Cruikshank smiled back at the preacher man. "I'm your man then, Mr. What's your name." Mr. Cruikshank intro duced himself. Hilly Sunday then took his automo bile for his Quell ranch, saying that he was going to study the rules, and that he expected a gala day next Monday. The Down Town team boys walloped Hubbard Taylor's Heights team by a score of 10 to 4 Sunday. The feature of the game was Meyers', pitching. He only allowed one hit in the six innings he was on the mound. Pape then tossed the sphere. Button caught for the Down Town boys. Hall and Mc Cutcheon formed te Heights battery during the first part of the game, being relieved by Davis and Osborne.
