Phone 4111 GROWERS SIGN AGAIN WITH DISTRIBUTORS A bulletin sent out by the Spokane omce of the North Pacific rruit Uii tribulora atatet that growers of differ ent communities are signing up with the central agency for the comiig year. Statement made in the bulletin of last week are as follows: At the annual meeting of the Yakima Valley Kruit Grower association this week. Dr. A. J. Pressey, of Selab, was reelected president, and F. E. Sickels, of North Yakima, secretary and man ager. A majority of the new executive board in whose hands the management of the association rests are the same men who served last year. The old members on the board, in addition to Dr. Pressey, are J. J. Rudkin, of Ken new ick. who was chosen treasurer, W. K. Armstrong, of North Yakima, and E. L. Porter, of Donald. The new members are C. H. iiinman, of South Nub Hill, Austin Woodyard, of Sunny side, and J. F. Snyder, of Zillah. The full subcentral board of trustees con sists of 48 members, or two from each of the locals, 27 of whom served last year. The contract of the association with the Distributors ia a continuing one. The annual report of the Yakima subcentral revealed that it has bandied 2,850 cars of fruit, including 1,870 cars of apples, this season to date. At the same time a year ago it had shipped 1,244 cars and had only 60 cars left to sell. The returns from sales arc $572, 944 to date; the distributions, including advances on fruit in storage and for which returns have not yet been re ceived, are $678,284. The actual ex pense of operating will be $22.30 per car this season, as compared to $34.60 last year. Although the tonnage has increased 82.5 per cent, the total ex pense is only 11.5 per cent more. The membership has grown from 966 a year ago to 1,302. The report states that the association will equal its 19)2 re turns on apples which were the highest in the northwest. The association ships a little less than 40 per cent of the Distributors' tonnage. The Central Idaho-Washington Fruit Growers' association has reported the reelection of F. N.Wright as vice pres ident and acting manager and C. H. Russelll as secretary-treasurer of the CUrkston (Lewiston) Producers' asso ciation. J. McAssey was chosen presi dent. The other trustees elected are F. Baslington, John R. Smith, Peter An derson and S. D. Steinger. It is stated that the Clarkston-l.ewiston district will ship double its past tonnage through the Distributors during the coming season. The Western Oregon Fruit Distribu tots has notified the central ollice that the Ashland Fruit and Produce associa tion at ita recent meeting voted unani mously to continue the existing contract with the Distributors. GEM PROGRAM TODAY ft The ninth and tenth episodes of "The Perils of Pauline" are being shown at the Gem today. Pauline longing for diversion, decides to become a motion picture actress and Chief Director Gas iner, of Pathe Freres, gives her a posi tion. He takes his company to Devil's Island where he proposes to film "Par adise Lost. " Owen, learning of Paul ine's plans, secretly joins the company, first telling Hicks to keep Harry, at all costs, from coming to the island. In accordance with this plan Hicks has Harry marooned upon a barren island. Owen bribes a dissolute actor to carry Pauline off. Harry escapes from his island upon a raft and rescues Pauline from the actor. Pauline then makes her ccsape from Devil's Island by aero plane. The aeroplane catches fire and the aviator, leaving Puuilne to her fate, jumps with the parachute and is killed by falling in front of a railrload train. Pauline brings the aeroplane safely to the ground and for the time is safe. Harrv. in order to control Pauline s love for adventure, plans to show her some smugglers at work and hires some men to give her a demonstration. Owens learns the plan and gets a gang of hard characters to abduct her. Paul ine, thinking they are Harry's men, is taken unawares and carried off. Hnrry traces her to an old lighthouse whi te the men have imprisoned her. With the aid of a rocket gun and breeches buoy he effects her escape. The ab ductors, seeing her escaping, pursue he buoy in which she is with a boat. Harry fires upon the boat and sinks it. Friday and Saturday "Mary Jane Entertains." Unusual Weather, Says Rand I "The recent cold weather has been very unusual, says Kooert Hand, of Wau-Guin-Guin. "I have lived in Hood River over SO years, and during all that time I never saw the east wind last so long as during the past three weens." Mr. Rand was in a jocular mood, when in the city Saturday. He is al ways prone to have a little joke. "1 have an advertisement," he said Satur day. HOUSE PASSES HOOD RIVER STATION BILL Local citizen rejoiced last week when it was learned that the house of representative had pasted the Hood River experimental station Mil. provid ing for the appropriation of $3,000 each year for the next two year for the local horticultural experiment station. The new wa made all the more pleas ant, when it was considered that it was the first direct appropriation I'll passed by the house. The appropriation contingent on an appropriation of $2000 annually by the Hood River county court. A rumor had been afloat that the legislature was. ia it campaign for economy, going to allow Hatiun bills to go by default, and it u feared that local men would have to isit Sa lem and put up a hard fight for the passage of the bill. Howetcr. trie o loiis passed the bill without ihe least effort at lobbying fin the part f those favoring it. DETIIMAN IMPORTS REGISTERED CATTLE Mr. and Mrs. C. Dethman and their son, Frank Dethman, and wife, were in the Willamette valley last week, where Mr. Dethman and son inspected the herds of several breeders of reg istered cattle. While away they pur chased 12 head of as fine registered stock as have ever been brought info the valley-eight pedigreed Durhams and four Jerseys. One of (Use is a registered bull calf under a ear old. for which Mr. Dethman paid the sum of $175. "1 have never seen a finer lot of cat tle than some of those Willamette val ley ranchers have," eaya Mr. IVthman, Sr. "We visited one man who had 60 head of beauties. He never lets them get from under shelter in the winter time. In the day time they are al lowed to stand in a huge shed that is bedded down every day and kept abso lutely clean." J he Durham brought to the valley by Mr. Dethman and son were pur chased from William Porter at Shedda. The Jerseys were purchased from James Porter, whose place is near Hal- sey. Ihe Dethmans, while in the Willam ette visited at the home of Mrs. Frank Dethman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Koch, who live near Shedds. Pomona Grange Meeting Next Wednesday The Hood River county Pomona grange will hold its next meeting the second Wednesday in this month at Pine Grove grange hall. Our Worthy Mas ter, C. P. Johansen, of the Upper Val ley, has assured- us of some outside talkers who will tell us just what was done at Salem during this legislature. Mrs. Nettie Crockett, our Worthy Lec turer, will give us a good literary pro gram and our press committee has something up their Bleeve which they will pull out. The ladies are already telling us how they will feed us, so let us grangers take a day off when Pomo na grange day is announced. Remem ber, it only meets four times a year, once each quarter, and we can well afford to enjoy ourselves that often. If the farmers would adopt 19th cen tury methods and do a little less work and more thinking, we would soon be able to say to the other fellow, "He that worketh not, neither shall he eat." Bro. Farmer, did you ever stop long enough to ask yourself why your voca tion cans tor more work and longer hours than any other? It should not and will not be so when we help to manage the whole structure of society as we should. A day uflf duty on the farm spent in a good day's council with your fellow neighbors will prove more profitable than staying at home.
