This ia absolutely false. Mr. Sinnott ia NOT allied with the liquor interests and never haa been ; he has no interest or armiation with them in any way. His personal habits have al ways been temperate and sober. It la well known that Representative Sinnott has, on many occasions, gone on record publicly that he will vote on the national prohibition amendment in congresa according to the way the ma jority or his constituents in his con gressional district vote on the liquor I . . . 1 VT . Isn't that exactly what any man who is elected to office should do represent me majority f that Congressman sinnott haa con sistently maintained this logical posi tion all along, ia shown by letters written to all of hia constituents who have written to him during the past summer and fall inquiriea as to hia pos ition on the Hobson amendment which would submit to the states the Question or national pronioition. We cite one instance which will suf. flee to show how frank and clear he haa been in his position in this matter. On July 31 of this year. Mr. Albert E White, of Freewater, Ore., a believer in national prohibition, wrote to Con gressman binnott, asking hia position on tne national prohibition amendment. Mr. ijinnott DromDt v replied as fo - lows: CHAPMAN OFFERS FREE RIGHT OF WAY W. S. White, "Freewater, Ore., "My dear sir: I write to acknowl edge receipt of youra of July 31st and desire to express my appreciation of your Kindness in writing to me and sending the enclosed clipping. As a candidate for representative in con gress on the Republican ticket, 1 do not feel it incumbent upon me to take part one way or the other in the issue involved in state prohibition in Oregon ana l ao not intend to ao so. "The national prohibition amend' ment, known as the Hobson amend- ment, will not be voted upon at this session of congress for the reasons set forth in the circular letter aent to members of the house by Congressman Hobson, a copy of which 1 herewith enclose. It will likely be voted upon ai me next session commencing in De cember. When it comes up for a vote 1 expect, as the representative of the second Oregon district, to voice the views of the majority of my constitu- ems in mat district as expressed in the November election. I received my nomination on the platform which I riled with the secretary of state last March or Ann), a copy of which I en close. You will note that 1 therein state, 'if nominated and elected I will. during my term of office, represent the views.oi me majority or my constituents.' I intend to keen this promise for I ieei mat it is the duty or a representa tive in congress to represent the views of the majority of his constituents. buch representation is the very basis or our iorm ot government. J. Sinnott. That this staunch Frohibitioniat. Mr. White, was entirely satisfied with this logical position of Congressman Sin nott, ia best shown by the following extract irom nis letter of reply to Mr. Sinnott, dated August 11. 1914: "I have your favor of recent date and note your position, which 1 think should be satisfactory all your con stituents, as it ia to me. Since in the state tight you are representing nobody but yourself, it is your privilege, and as a party nominee perhaps it ia vour duty, to reserve your opinion on this issue, in tne national tight where you represent inousands ol us, it is unques tionably your duty to vote the senti ment of the majority of your constitu ents if that can be determined. While state and national prohibition are not identical issues, they are so close v related that I believe fvou would be justified in viewing the former as an inuex to tneir prooaDie view on the latter, and so I commend your decision to use tne movember vote of vourxon stitenta on the question of state prshi L . I . ,. . union as a racior to determine your vote on tne onepnerd-Hobson resolu tion." Congressman Sinnott has written this sort of letter to so many constitu ents during the past months that the friends of Mr. Cleaver certainly must know Mr. binnott a position. When the friends of Cleaver circulate litera ture representing the congressman aa admittedly a supporter of the liauor interests, it savors strongly or wilful misrepresentation.! Instead of losing votes. Mr. Sinnott wilj gain by this unwarranted attack. It is now a common expression amonir Democrats, since this attack haa been made, that while they had previously intended to support their party ticket. they will now ioin in rebukintr thn in. dividuals who are circulating these slanderous stories. The majotity of Probitionista. who stand for clean politics, will, them- selves, bitterly resent this contemptible attempt to gain votes for the Prohibi tion candidate, and manv a level-head ed, fair-minded Prohibitionist, who knows the truth and respects Mr. Sin not for tbe splendid man and congress man that he is, will switch his vote because of this sinister attack on 'Nick." It is universally agreed that Mr. Sin nott has made the best congressman the state of Oregon haa had for many years. He haa lost no opportunity to work for the best interests of the state, hia congressional district and his home town. Nick Sinnott is a Pride and honor to Wasco county and The Dalles. It takes a solemn sum of money to buy an automobile and it takes goad roads, as well as gas oline, to run them. A toy ride in the harvest fields of this state ia one of the most exhilar ating experiences that is avaiiabe on this continent and one that would charm a tourist and convince a home seeker. A speedway lined with grow ing crops and blooded stock is a land scape that one seldom tours in a .life time. In mapping out automobile routes the Oregon harvest fields should be given prominent position. Why not a see Kural America f irst psignT It Alwajs Does the Work.
