WHITE SALMON WOM
EN DEUGHTFUL HOSTS
I On Thursday. October 1. tb Wom
an's club of Whit Salmon entertained
the Womm'i Club of Underwood and
the Utilie Dulci elub of tbe earn place,
and the Woman' elub of Hood River,
at luncheon. The Underwood eluba
came by rail and the Hood River club
ferried over in a body on the barge, all
being transported by autoa and car
riagea to tbe delightful home of Mr.
and Mrs. A. H. Jewett. There they
were cordially and graciously received
by tbe bostesa and reception committee
and presented to a most charming host
of sinter club women, who swarmed
about the spaeioua grounds, admiring
the rare onuaual beauties of tbe place.
The scene presented waa indeed lively
and interesting and waa one to leave a
lasting impression; the pleasant groups
of smartly gowitedf ladies scattered
about conversing while others went
upon investigating tours, the long
tables spread in a beautiful green cir
cle surrounded by shrubs and trees in
their autumn foliage, new guesta ar
riving and the autoa whirling away,
and young girls in white flitting among
the ahrubbery as they hastened the
preparations for the luncheon, and
back of it all the great, grey, shim
mering mountain rising to meet the
sky.
After the delicious luncheon had been
served by the high school girla of the
domestic science department, Mrs. A.
H. Jewett presided as toast mistress,
welcoming her many guests and urging
that there be unity between our clubs,
without rivalry. The state boundary
doea not separate us; our towns and
people have grown up together; you
are alwaya welcome and will never find
the gate shut no r the door locked.
Mrs. Pearl Jewett, president of the
White Sslmon Woman's club, gave the
address of welcome, closing ber re
marks with these lines :
"Come in the evening or come in the
morning;
Come when expected or come with
out warning.
Gladness and welcome will be here to
greet you,
And the oftener you come the better
' we'll treat you."
Mrs. J. 0. McLaughlin, president of
the Hood River Woman's club, re
sponded first. She said there could be
no doubt in the minds of the hostesses
as to the Hood River club's apprecia
tion of their invitation, for tbey had
come 65 strong andere beginning to
fear that on account or the duo a in
crease in numbers they might outgrow
their invitation. Mrs. McLaughlin re
minded the club members of their duty
as workers, which should not be for
gotten in the pleasure of goodfellow
shiD and the inspiration of their meet
ing; together. The Massachusetts
women are making a concerted effort
to have war put down and are entering
protest against tbe manufacture ot
fire arms as a commercial business
The issues before our two states should
call forth our best efforts that to
make both states dry. She also com
plimented Mrs. Jewett for her activi
ties, always toward aiding worthy ob
jecta and her byroad interest in human
ty ana saia :
"What we give we get,
And all our many paths are set
With dreary or with golden miles.
Just as we bring them irowns or
smiles."
Mrs. W. W. Rodwell, of the Hood
River club, then spoke of a change
which seemed necessary to be made in
our yearly club viBits, and moved that
hereafter the Hood Kiver club De al
lowed to bring their own lunches across
and make tne day one of proht as wel
as nleasure by having lectures and con
ferences somewhat upon the order of a
small Chautauqua, I he motion was
carried by a large majority.
Mrs. H. A. Hussey. president of the
Underwood Woman's club, responded
for her club which was in large attend
ance. 23 being present.
Mrs. A. J. Haynes, of the Utilie
Dulci club, then responded, her club
being well represented by 18 members
Mrs. Scott (Joe. of White salmon,
spoke of cheerfulness and good fellow
ship and of making strangers welcmoe.
Her theme was to do what we mean
to do today.
"Count that day lost whose low de
scending sun
Views by thy hand no worthy action
done.
Mrs. Marietta Hunsaker, of White
Salmon, spoke for the Parent-Teacher
Assocation and its object, the aocial
center work, and the school house as a
legislative hall. She aaid true patriot
ism no longer consists in shouldering a
gun and following the fife and drum, or
in giving up our sons to the god of
war. but in! giving up self to the bet
terment of humanity. There can be no
true civilization until we federate in
that spirit among the nations.
Mrs. J. C. Holcomb. of White Salm
on, spoke on cheerfuness holding it in
our own lives and reaching it out for
the brightening of other lives. She
called to mind our club husbanda in the
pantries at that moment, seeking what
they might devour, and pointed to the
only husband present. A. H. Jewett,
whose face beamed with pride and
whose feet had taken many a willing
step preparing for us, and aiding our
worthy bostesa who was the mother of
the club movement in that part of her
state.
Mr. Jewett was then called to make
a speech and assured the ladiea that be
had not been so frightened kut once
before in his ilfe, and that when he
was first called out In the firing line as
a soldier.
Mrs. Chas. Castner, of Hood River,
spoke of the school house for genera
purposes. As tbe taxpayers build and
support the school it is for them to use
for the public good.
Mrs. Unice Melville responded to a
call in a very witty speech, after which
Mrs. K. W. Sinclair, of Hood River,
gave a very interesting report of the
national convention of Woman's clubs
held in Chicago, III., last June. Mrs
Sinclair has been in attendance at this
convention and certainly imported much
of her enthusiasm to the 250 favored
club women who shall long remember
the day at White Salmon.
Warned Against Diseased Shipments
County- Fruit Inspector H. M. Hoi
brook reports thst the has been forced
to prohibit several shipments of fruit
recently on account of finding wormy
and diseased apples among the fruit.
"In all cases," saya Mr. Holbrook,
"the growera profess ignorance of the
law prohibiting such shipments of
fruit."
The Oregon laws prohibit tbe ship
ment of any apples that are wormy or
that are in any way infested with dis
eases. When your food does not digest well
and you feel "blue," tired and discour
aged, you should nse a little llerbine at
bedtime. It opens the bowels, purifies
the system and restores a fine foeling of
health and energy. Price 50c. Sold by
