SCOTT & PIFER Hotel Oregon Building P APPLE CROP ESTI MATES DISCUSSED In spite of the fact that there will be no cash buyers or speculator to enliven the apple market this year, and that the consumption of a large production generally throughout the I nited States and Canada will be practically confined to this country on account of the limi tations imposed by the European war, the North Pacific Kruit Distributors are not inclined to take an altogether gloomy view of the outlook for their affiliated growers. Material reductions in the apple crop are being reported by the principal ap ple growing districts of the east and middle west. During the past week the Distributors have received communica tions from New York, Virginia. Michi gan, Missouri and Arkansas stating that the production in those states will be less than estimated at the time of the International Apple Shippers' asso ciation nieetirg in Boston a month ago when it was figured that the total out put would reach tiO.OUO.OOO barrels. One feature of the recent decrease is that the No. 1 stock has been most effected. An inspection of the western New York apple orchards reveals that the quality there has been lowered and is proving a disappointment to both growers and dealers. Unfavorable weather and insect pests are largely responsible fur this change. Similar conditions are (aid to obtain in both Virginia and West Virginia. In Michi gan the crop is irregular, according to recent information. Heat and drouth have prevented proper development in Missouri, while cool, damp weather has caused scab and blotch to appear in Arkansas and has cut down the quanti ty of storage grades. In the northwest , although the qual ity still remains excellent, the crop has fallen off 10,000 cars, approximately 10 per cent, since blossom time, or at least is that much short of the early estimates. The figures compiled at the time of the blossom period were from 20,000 to 25,000 cars, an average ranging somewhere around 23,500 cars. Later the estimate dropped to between 15,000 and 17,500 cars. Now after the most comprehensive canvass it is placed at 13,610 cars. This information is given out by the Distributors to the growers to indicate that there is no cuuse for utter discour agement at this time, especially upon tne part of those who have placed their crop in the hands of a marketing agency sufficiently extensive ih seope to exercise an orderly control of the market situation. A certain stability is creeping into the apple situation which did not exist a few weeks ago, as the result of the Distributors' com manding position in the apple deal this year with over half of the apple ton nage pledged to them. , DEBATE SUNDAY ON THE LIQUOR QUESTION The announcement of a debate Sun day afternoon at 2 o'clock at the open air auditorium between Col. E. Hofer, of Salem, and Rev. Clarence True W il son, of Portland, on the liquor business, has aroused no small interest in the city. Col. Hofer upholds the side of those opposed to state wide prohibi tion. Rev. Wilson has taken un the cudgel for state wide prohibition. Both have unusual forensic ability, and a royal debate is promised those attend ing. Lol. Holer and Kev. Wilson have already debated the liquor question in a number of Oregon cities. In the event that the weather is not suitable for an out of door meeting, the debate will be held at the Asbury iwetnooist church. War and Trade With the outbreak of hostilities in Europe it was natural to expect a trade depression, but never has the business man, the wide world over, experienced conditions as are existing at present. One would imagine that the merchant in Japan would be able to take advant age of the war in Europe and reap a niue nittie r.arvcst in certain quarters. No doubt some are. but there are!manv firms in Japan who find opportunities ior aoing business with America, for instance, but are prevented through in- ablitiy to make use of the usual finan cial facilities to which they have been accustomed. The toy trade in the United States is one opportunity, and there are many others that might be taken advantage of at present by the foreign exporter if conditions were not so abnormal. Raw silk, habutae, etc., have received a tremendous set back, the decrease in exports for Yokohama, running to seven figures as compared with the same preiod (ten days) in July.-Yokohama, Japan, Weekly Box of Curios. FLYING FOXES OF INDIA. During the Day They Sleep In Trees, Hanging Head Downward. Teople who have lived In Indin are fa in i I in r with the long strings of flying foxes which cau often be seen wending their way in single file from their sleeping places In remote trees to the fruit gardens upon which tbey prey. These curious creatures, snys a writ er in the Wide World Magazine, some times measure as much as four feet across the wings and have reddish brown fur and mole colored wings. After their nocturnal depredations thpy fly away with the dawn to a tree in some isolated place nnd there rest dur ing the day. hanging head downward from the boughs In the manner of bnts, clutching the branch with their feet As the flying foxes gather on the tree selected there Is a tremendous commo tion, for each newcomer Is vigorously driven off from one place after another until he eventually manages to secure a perch for himself. Those on the tree meanwhile keep up nn Incessant wran gling, each endenvorlng to secure the hlglifst and best place to rest on.
