MANY LAWS HAVE
BEEN INITIATED
The voters cf the tUte will be called
on to decide upon mir.y Ian that will
be placed before them by initiation at
the Novebmer election. Tco many of
the bills are of the freak nature. Many
of them, while theoretically ideal, put
into practice will cause slumps in the
business of the state. The state of
Oregon is already hampered by too
much law. One of the bills recently
initiated, which, if passed, will add
enormously to the epxense of hotels and
restaurants and all businesses that
muft operate seven days in the week
is as follows:
Section 1. It is declared to be the
public policy of the state of Oregon
that each and every person of either
sex employed for wages as hereinafter
specified, shall be allowed a period of
rest of at least one day of 24 consecu
tive hours, in each and every calendar
week, Ui'permit said person to improve
his or her physical, mental and moral
condition, to the end that the general
welfare may be prompted and the gen
eral health, intelligence, uprightness
and usefulness of citizens increased.
Section 2. Every employer of persons
of either sex for wages, whether such
employer be an individual, partnership
or corporation, engaged in carrying on
in this state manufacturing, mercan
tile, or public utility buisness, or any
other business conducted for profit
shall allow each person, except those
exempted in section three hereof, em
loyed in Rich manufacturing, mercan
tile, or public utility business, or any
other business conducted for profit, at
least one day consisting of 21 consceu
tive hours for rest in each and every
calendar week.
Section 3. This act shall not apply
to janitors, watchmen, or employes
whoHe duties include no work in excess
of two consecutive hours of labor on
the day allotted for their rest period.
The proposed bill goes on to state
that the employer shall keep a time
book, with the names of every employe
in it and the hours worked, for the in
spection of the labor commissioner, and
provides a penalty for the violation of
the act.
NOTED PATHOLOGIST
VISITS THE VALLEY
In the company of Piof. H. S. Jack
son, of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege, Dr. I.. K. Jones, plant patholo
gist of the University of Wisconsin,
arrived here last Friday and spent the
day inspecting the work of the horti
cultural experiment station. Dr. Jones,
who has been making a tour of the
northwest, was on his way to Califor
nia, where he will spend the summer.
Pictures on Apples
In catering to a market for the fan
ciest of fancy apples, Harry Max ted of
Washington has hit upon a plan for
printing pictures and designs of various
sorts upon hte skin of apples and in
this way creating a novelty, which for
its novelty alone, brings a high price.
I'ainting letters or designs on the
skin of an unripe apple and permitting
it to remain until the fruit has become
well colored, is a well known process,
by which it is possible to have a yel
low or green tracing of the design when
the paint is washed olf. But Mr. Max
ted has modernized the process by
using a patented film of his own which
is stuck on the side of the apple before
it begins to color.
The film remains upon the fruit until
it is matured, when there is produced
a red design upon a field of green and
surmounted by a deep, rich red of the
portion left uncovered by the fi'm. This
year Mr. Maxted has reproduced twenty-five
dilferent lodge emblems Shrine,
Scottish Kite, Knight Templar and lilue
Lodge; Eastern Star, Odd Fellow, Ke
bekah, Knights of Pythias, Woodmen,
etc. lie has reproduced various local
trademarks, slogans, comic designs and
even portraits.
Just Little Stories
Newly arrived from the Highlands,
Jock McTnvish wandered about the big
city until fairly tired out. Long had
he hesitated about entering any of the
brilliantly lighted restaurants, but at
length he mustered up courage and
was ushered to a table. The waiter
handed him the menu card, which was
a foreign language to McTavish. Fi
nally, in desperation, he said to the
hovering waiter: "Ah'm no hungry,
no hungry at a'. Jint bring nie a plate
o' whusky an' a wee spoon!"
