A two week' course in practical ag
riculture fur boyi of the seventh, eighth
and high ichool grades will be held on
the college farm at Oorvallia in con
nection with regular summer ichool
The purpose is two-fold: the value to
the boys who attend; the influence on
the schools represented by these boys.
The boys will live in Cauthorn 1 1 a 11.
School instruction will occupy four to
live hours each day, including satur
tay. with two entire afternoons free
for recreation. For purpose of instruc
tion and play, they will be divided into
groups of twer.ty or twenty-five, ac
cording to age, and more particularly
the stage of mental development and
interest in the subject, and taught by
college instructors. The method will
he informal and clashes conducted in
the open fields, orchards, gardens.
barns, greenhonges and shops, rather
than in the classroom.
During the remainder of the day they
will engage in athletic games, cross
country hikes, swimming and amuse
merits calculated to prevent "Jack'i
becoming a dull boy." Kor purposes
of recreation, arrangement will be
made so that these pupils have the
benefit of the athletic equipment of the
institution, including the gymnasium,
swimming pool and athletic fields.

The sixth annual Commonwealth Con
ference of the University of Oregon
begin its sessions, which close tomor

investigational committees were ap
pointed last year, among them being
the Ilydro-Flertrie Commission, of
which Dr. J. F. Watt, of this city, is a
member, and will make reports at the
conference of this year.

SIZING MACHINE
J. R. Kunarr.aker baa invented a new
sizing machine, one of which, recently
completed at the Dark carpenter shop
in the old armory building on Cascade
avenue, hat created an interest amorg
the orchardists who have seen it in
operation. The new machine will size
two grades at once. The fruit is fed
into shallow metal covered cups that
move along beneath loose hung boards.
These boards are graduated in height
from the cups, brusing off first the
large fruit, and then the smaller and
smaller sizes. The apples fall directly
into the packing tables within easy
reach of the packers.
This is the second sizing machine to
be built by Mr. Nunamaker. Last fall
he constructed a hand sizer. The re
cently manufactured machine will be
power driven. Its cott is estimated to
be less than 1150.

A new Iowa apple originated by the
horticultural section of the stute ex
periment station is seing sent out lo
Iowa nurserymen for distribution for a
definite test as to its yielding qualities
inall sections of the state.
The new seedling apple, known as
"Iowa 40;," is believed to be very
