Y. Crowed I, who had charge of tha pro gram, and who ii charter member of the organization, presided. The mem bers of the cerps, who now number about co, served luncbeon, which was attended by about 60, including mem hers of Canby Post. G. A. R., and friends. The Post was organized Hi years ago. Of the charter members of the Corps, the following survive Mrs Adeila Stranahan, the first president; Mrs. Oeo. Y. Crowell, Mrs, John A. Wilson, Mrs. Ursula Uukes, Mrs. hi eanor I'. Potter, Mrs. Elizabeth Cham' plain, Mrs. Lime Thomas. Mrs. Ella Miildleton, Mrs. Elizabeth Rand, Mrs. C. ii. Stranahan and Mrs. Newton Clark. The program Saturday afternoon was participated in by Mr. I.oune Hoyden Mrs. P. S. Davidson, Mn. J. H. (Jill and Miss Lily Fisher. At the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Corps in 1903, a let ter from Mrs. t. L. bmith, one of the charter members, who on account of illness was unable to be present, was read. The letter, which gives interest ing facts of the early days of the or ganization, was read from a copy of the Glacier of April 15, 1909. It fol lows: . "Dear Members of Canby W. R. C, No. 16: "Sometimes it ia profitable to look hack over the career of an order, and especially so when that order ia marked by an honorable record of an enthusi astic devotion for one's country. Canby Post was instituted by Mrs. Fanny f.ouiisberry and Mrs. Soolmon Abra ham. The name I suggested, as every heart was tender in memory of Gen. Canby, who had recently been murdered by the Modoca. Mra. Abraham and her husband, more than any others, were instrumental in locating the Soldiers' Home at Roseburg and they were de voted friends of the soldiers always. Mrs. Abraham did the last work of her life in canning fruit for the home. 1 visited Mrs. Abraham in Roseburg and found her corps working harmoniously and she was a recognized leader. Par- dun the personal note of tnia letter. hut when Mrs. Abraham confided to me her disappointment that her son Albert was unsettled in his school work atjd wanted to adopt some plans of his own, I assured her that he would probably come around to her views later. He certainly did. for he ia now State Senator Abraham, one of the men con spicuous as framing some of the most advanced laws aa regards our civil laws and duties. 'In the early Hood River days Canbv Corps was the first charitable order in existence, and I remember our com mittee, to find work for the needy, was fortunate in having Mvrabeth Crowell as its chairman. The work she did was so well was a blessing to many and a credit to the Corps. We had a most energetic scerctary in Lizzie R. Thom as. I was treasurer and our books al ways balanced. Mrs. Adelia Stranahan was an ideal president. She moulded a lot of raw material into good workers. She was always courteous and demand ed esteem, a devoted woman to the or der. A good many times we sent Sun day dinners to those in need who had been reported to the Corps. I only re member one hilariuos time, when we gave a reception to some visitors and Mrs. Thomas wanted the tables decor ated, and I know i got very tired be fore she was suited with our efforts. 1 playfully appealed to Mrs. Stranahan as Aaeiia ana complained of Lizzie s fussiness. Mrs. Stranahan replied, 'Well, Georgiana, the tables will be very nice.' From that day some of the older members are spoken of as Ursula, Myrabeth, Adeila and Georgiana. You will notice that I am growing gar rulous, a sign of old ne. 1 must cloBe with a sincere wish that you will go on to a ripe fruition of all your faithful sowing of the seeds of patriotism. Yours, Georgiana Smith. "J BOOTH'S FRIENDS TAKE UP FIGHT Evidenced b recent actions of R. Ilia opposition to the re peal of free tolls bill is declared to be spectacular and not in accordance with past actions. Senator Chamberlain voted for the tariff bill now in effect, and which is said to be detrimental to Oregon. As an instance of the' damage done which the tatriff law is doing Oregon producers, we are now receiving eggs, many of them rotten, necessitatin their being aent to the crematory, and all of inferior quality, from China by me inousanda of cases. Regulator Keeps Perfect Time After spending the past year on the timepiece, W. F. It has been syn chronized, and now clicks away the seconds and minutes with practically nu friction, keeping as nearly us can be ascertained the absolutely correct time. The regulator winds itself automat icHlly every hour. Mr. Laraway also has a chronometer which was used when he was in low a by the tiurlington system to regulate the time of the trainmen.
